Excerpt from From Samuel to Solomon Whenever a New Testament truth is found incarnated in an Old Testament biography, the analysis of each chapter of this will be sure to yield instruction. Four histories - Samuel's and Saul's, David's and Solomon's - cross the highest lines of Israel's splendor as a kingdom. Whoever under stands those men will have attained a knowledge of human nature which will prove valuable to him as a Citizen and a Christian. It is easy to call the contents of this volume lec tures; but the fairer thing to say would be that they have all done their duty in the pulpit just the same as if they had been sermons. I am pleased to detect in them repetitions and reiterations now and then; for it shows a fearless desire to press the expository lessons as they came from the four teachers whose lives were so individual and yet in many respects so alike. More and more am I convinced, as years move on, that the true secret of a pastor's in uence and success is found in the one counsel: Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove. Excerpt from Israel Under Samuel, Saul, and David, to the Birth of Solomon The history of Israel, viewed as the Theocracy, or Kingdom of God, consists of three periods: First, that under the guidance of Prophets (from Moses to Samuel); secondly, that under the rule of Kings (from Saul to the Babylonish Captivity); and, thirdly, that under the reign of High-priesis (from Ezra to the birth of Jesus Christ). Thus the Theocracy had passed through its full typical development in all its stages, when He came, to Whom they all pointed: Jesus Christ, the Prophet, King, and High-priest of the Kingdom of God. The period described in the present volume closes one of these stages, and commences another. The connecting link between them was Samuel - who alone fully realised the mission of the Judges, and who was also Divinely appointed to inaugurate the new institution of royalty in Israel. That royalty next appeared in its twofold possibility - or, as we might express it, in its negative and positive aspects. Saul embodied the royal ideal of the people, while David represented the Scriptural ideal of royalty in its conscious subjection to the will of the Heavenly King. Saul was, so to speak, the king after Israel's, David after God's own heart. But with the actual introduction of monarchy the first period had come to an end, and a new era begun, which was intended to continue till the third and last preliminary stage was reached, which prepared the way for the Advent of Him, Who was the fulfilment of the typical meaning of all. Excerpt from Samuel and Saul, Their Lives and Times The materials for the lives of Samuel and Saul are found only in the First Book of Samuel, the First Book of Chronicles, and in some few notices in the New Testament. The ancient monuments afford no help, except in so far as they have tended to settle the chronology of the Exodus and the reign of Solomon, and consequently of events reckoned from those eras. Of late years such a mass of illustrative matter, historical, geographical, and connected with manners and customs, has been collected, that the writer's task is greatly facilitated, and he has rather to select and employ existing materials than to busy himself with independent investigation. I have largely availed myself of such aids, and gladly own my obligations to the commentaries of Bishop Ellicott, Mr. Kirkpatrick, and especially of Dean Payne Smith in The Pulpit Commentary. Excerpt from The Parallel History of the Jewish Monarchy, Vol. 1: Printed in the Text of the Revised Version 1885; The Reigns of David and Solomon, 1 Samuel 31 to 1 Kings 11, 1 Chronicles 10 to 2 Chronicles 9 I trust the book may be serviceable even to advanced Students, who wish to collate for themselves the two authorities; but it is intended primarily for use in Schools. The difficulty Of following the history in two sometimes concurrent and sometimes divergent authorities, both bound up in the same Bible - and often in very small type - is apt to drive boys to Compendiums and Manuals, ' in which a clear narrative is given, but the dignity and beauty of the original are entirely lost. By te-arranging the text I hope to have made the study of this part of the Bible easier and more attractive. I wish to express my gratitude to the Joint Committee of the Univer sities Of Oxford and Cambridge for leave to print the text of the Revised Version. To Professor Driver, for most readily and kindly allowing me to reprint, as an Introduction, a passage from his Literature of the Old Testament, ' my warmest thanks are due. Excerpt from Samuel in the Temple I should hope that every member of a Sabbath school knew all about the story of little Samuel, whose history is in the Bible. Yet 1 fear such is not the case; and therefore propose to call attention to it in these few pages. He was the first-born, and his mother, whose name was Hannah, loved him very much. She had prayed for a great while, that God would give her that little boy; and when he was born, she knew that God had heard her prayer, and she was very grateful. Samuel The Prophet Classic Reprint written by F. B. Meyer and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-17 with Religion categories.

Samuel has the distinction of being Israel's last judge and the reference point of a new phase in the history of God's Chosen People. He also is the one who picked and anointed the first two kings of Israel, underlining the important role that the prophet played in Jewish history. As such, it is not surprising for him to become the subject of a book, especially Rev. F.B. Meyer's Samuel the Prophet. The author closely examines the life of this great Hebrew prophet, dwelling longer on the most poignant periods of the subject's life. He adds dimension to what is already known about Samuel by adding his own reflections and commentaries, which help readers appreciate the meaning of various symbols, rituals, and events that took place while the Israeli judge was still alive. With the inclusion of Rev. Meyer's spiritual exhortations, this 1910 edition also serves as a material that one can reflect upon and also use as a guide in enriching one's faith. This volume is a definitive account of Samuel's life, which combines references to the prophet found in the Old and New Testament. As such, Pastor Meyer did manage to knit together a cohesive, accurate, and detailed portrait of this powerful Biblical figure. This indeed is one book that those serving in a community-based ministry, as well as those studying Biblical history, will find a very informative and spiritually enriching resource.
