The love story of Caleb and Sarah Sax continues in the second book of the Blue Hawk trilogy, which takes them to 1833 Texas (then still part of Mexico), when the hunger for free land fueled the growing populace. Inevitably, these new settlers want Texas to be an independent province apart from Mexican rule. Caleb’s family is pulled into the Mexican war, and one of Caleb’s cherished sons rides off to join the fight at the Alamo. Thinking his son has died, Caleb must contend with this terrible sorrow amid facing an old enemy who returns to once again to destroy Caleb and Sarah’s life together. Danger and tragedy lurk everywhere, but Caleb and Sarah share a love that rises above all trial and tragedy. Frontier Fires is packed with stunning and factual American history and shows how one family became crucial to the birth of Texas. PRAISE: “Power, passion, tragedy, and triumph are Rosanne Bittner’s hallmarks. A view of the War of 1812 from a social perspective. This book provides a fresh new view of the battles of the war and goes behind the scenes to explore wartime trading activity, particularly American dealings with Napoleon and cross-border commerce, as well as the activities of John Jacob Astor, America’s richest man and war financier, and his fur-trading partners in Montreal. There was a wealth of military screw-ups. What did the generals do before each battle to lose it, and what could they have done to win? And did the incompetence and mixed loyalties of Military Governor Sir George Prevost, grandson of a financier of the American Revolution and nephew by marriage of Vice President Aaron Burr, nearly lose Canada for the British? The book also provides glimpses of some of the fascinating behind-the-scenes players, such as legendary but flawed President Thomas Jefferson, and President Madison’s wife, Dolley, who could have won the war single-handedly had she been able to get all the generals together in the same drawing room.

Rome and the Northern Frontier. 9 C.E. One seeks revenge. One desires freedom. One craves victory. One demands justice. When his parents were killed by a barbarian attack, Marcus was rescued as an infant by his adopted uncle. Will his plan for revenge bring him the peace of mind he desperately desires? Her oppressive home life has forced Helena to seek freedom. Will her fights in the arena bring her closer to her goal or will her unexpected encounter with Marcus disrupt her search? A barbarian from the far Germanic north, Arminius, now a Roman citizen, leads a Roman auxiliary unit. Can he plot a victory over those who ripped him away from his parents when he was a child? Rakan, a centurion at the Port Ostia fortress near Rome, was one of Arminius’s former instructors. Is justice in the stars as he tries to solve a string of grisly murders which may be tied to any one of them? The threads of these lives lead to the Teutoburg Forest where three Roman legions will clash with the Germanic tribes. The world will be forever changed.

Fort William Henry and Fort Phil Kearny were both military outposts of the North American frontier. Both lasted but briefly--about two years from construction until their walls went up in flames. And both saw what were termed "massacres" by Indians outside their walls. This book reexamines the traumatic events at both forts. The Fort William Henry Massacre was condemned by both the British and the French as barbaric. Yet these European powers proved capable of similar crimes. The Fort Phil Kearny defeat, traditionally attributed to Captain William Fetterman's having disobeyed orders, has been scrutinized in recent years. Did the women present at that time write a distorted version of events? It would appear that his second-in-command, the rash Lieutenant George Grummond, led the charge over Lodge Trail Ridge. Or did he?

"October 10, 1938 was Canada's Thanksgiving Day, but that warm and windy Monday brought the horror of forest fire to the Ontario-Minnesota Rainy border. Seventeen people in Dance Township, Ontario, lost their lives as did one man in International Falls, Minnesota. In addition to telling a story of disaster and near disaster, the authors examine what life was like for settlers on one of North America's last frontiers."--Pub. desc.
