The publication of this volume is purposeful in bringing together the information available till date on various aspects of fungal diversity in Indian sub-continent. The Indian sub-continent is characterized with diverse topography, climatic conditions and turn over of green vegetation all the year round in its one or the other parts and correspondingly this sub-continent is adorned with immense fungal diversity. This compilation focuses light on the diversity and bioremediation, biosynthesis of gold nanoparticles employing fungal organisms, biotechnological and molecular approaches in characterization of fungal diversity, biological control, new approaches on fungal diversity including heavy metal toxicities and resistance in fungi, alkaloid biosynthesis and complexone siderophores as iron transport compounds in some group of fungal organisms. An account is also presented on fungal cellulases in novel industrial application, aflatoxin contamination, toxicosis and preventive measures. A major part of this book is devoted to discuss the recent trends and current status of diversity of fungal forms or groups thereof including thermophilic fungi, keratinolytic fungi, rust fungi, agaricales, acellular slime fungi, fleshy fungi, Alternaria species associated with cucurbitaceous vegetables and fungal diversity in forest ecosystems. A great deal of morphotaxonomic diversity is presented including coelomycetes, loculoascomycetes and certain individual fungal genera viz., Phoma, Ravenalia, Vermiculariopsiella, Phaeoramularia, Gonatophragmium, Stenella, Corynespora, Colletotrichum and Ceratocytis species. Habitat diversity has also been discussed with reference to indoor and outdoor environments. Some chapters have also been devoted to discuss the biodiversity of fungal forms as biocontrol agents and their commercial application in agriculture and human life.

Mycology is a frontier area of research in life sciences. Fungi represent one of the three major evolutionary segments along with plants and animals. Fungal multidimensional features with basic and applied value projected their potential beyond routine systematics, diversity and environmental studies. In view of tremendous developments in the field of Mycology, the present treatise emphasizes various aspects of contemporary issues in mycology. It comprises 22 chapters with emphasis on the fungal ecology, diversity and metabolites. The topics treated include aquatic ecology, diversity and phylogeny, mutualism and interactions, potential metabolites, pathology and toxins, fungal infections and prevention, cell permeabilization and advances in monocarboxylate transporters in yeasts with an emphasis on cancer therapy. This volume is of special interest to mycologists as a valuable source of information on the frontier areas of mycology dealing with diversity, ecological amplitudes, methods of assessment, novel metabolites and bioprospecting avenues

The book provides an introduction to the basics of fungi, discussing various types ranging from edible mushrooms to Neurospora – a model system for genetics and epigenetics. After addressing the classification and biodiversity of fungi, and fungi in different ecological niches, it describes the latest applications of fungi, their role in sustainable environments and in alleviating stress in plants, as well as their role in causing plant and animal diseases. Further chapters explore the advances in fungal interactions research and their implications for various systems, and discuss plant-pathogen interactions. The book also features a section on bioprospecting, and is an extremely interesting and informative read for anybody involved in the field of mycology, microbiology and biotechnology teaching and research.

Sebacinales have emerged as a fascinating order with mutualistic plant-fungal symbionts that consists of exclusively beneficial fungi. This volume of Soil Biology presents an overview of the current results in Sebacinales research with a focus on the potential of these fungi in crop improvement and stress tolerance. The authors demonstrate that Sebacinales are not only extremely versatile in their associations with roots, but are also almost universally present as symptomless endophytes. With this extraordinary diversity, Sebacinales with the key fungus Piriformospora indica might possess remarkable significance in natural ecosystems. Their biotechnological applications are expected to improve the quality of crops while maintaining ecologically and economically sustainable production systems.
