Here, in its original English translation, is the dime-novelesque biography of one of the most infamous bandits in the history of the Old West, for decades a source of fear and legend in the state of California. To Mexicans and Indians, however, Joaquin Murrieta became a symbol of resistance to the displacement and oppression visited on them in the wake of the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), particularly by the "'Forty-Niners" who flooded into California from all over the world during the Gold Rush. In his introduction, literary critic Luis Leal has researched and written the first definitive history of the Murrieta legend in its various incarnations. Ireneo Paz's Spanish-language biography was first published in Mexico City in 1904; it was translated into English by Frances P. Belle in 1925. This edition includes several line-drawings that appeared in the original volume, heightening the strong sense evoked here of this turbulent period in U. S. history.

Becoming Joaquin Murrieta: John Rollin Ridge and the Making of an Icon analyzes the transnational archive of Joaquin Murrieta narratives. An icon of Mexican resistance during the California Gold Rush era, Murrieta has been described by Luis Leal as "the only Californian hero on the level of art, history, and myth." This dissertation explores the incarnation of Murrieta's elusive subjectivity in the first novel written by a Native American: Cherokee writer John Rollin Ridge's 1854 publication, The Life and Adventures of Joaquin Murieta, the Celebrated California Bandit. By examining the multigenerational influence of Ridge's novel as the textual origin point of the Murrieta archive, Becoming Joaquin Murrieta proposes a new understanding of Ridge's global significance. Joaquin Murrieta is unique among folk heroes in that performers often assume his persona and metaphorically become the mythical hero, a pattern evident in the traditional borderlands ballad, "El Corrido de Joaquin Murrieta," and Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzales's poem, I Am Joaquin. This pattern is rooted in Ridge's configuration of Murrieta as a persona with the capacity to be anywhere at any time. Becoming Joaquin Murrieta reads Ridge's novel in conjunction with several notable and influential versions of the story: the 1859 California Police Gazette plagiarism of Ridge; Ireneo Paz's 1904 plagiarism of the Police Gazette; Adolfo Carrillo's 1922 short story; Walter Noble Burns's 1932 novel, The Robin Hood of El Dorado, and the 1936 MGM film of the same name; Los Madrugadores's 1934 recording of the corrido; Gonzales's epic Chicano poem of 1967; Pablo Neruda's 1967 play, Fulgor y Muerte de Joaquin Murieta (Splendor and Death of Joaquin Murieta); and Isabel Allende's 1999 novel, Hija de la Fortuna (Daughter of Fortune). In tracing the transnational production of the Murrieta narrative, Becoming Joaquin Murrieta exposes nationalist constructions that shape the archive's patterns of racialized violence and culturally sanctioned retaliation.

Ivan Tubau efectua un discurs an- tinacionalistg que fins ara no s'havia fet en català. A Catalunya hi ha mitja dotzena de firmes que són irresistibles i ens obliguen a llegir des de la primera fins a l'última ratlla: la de l'Ivan Tubau és una d'aquestes firmes. És dels convençuts que, per anar bé, la llengua escrita ha de ser un reflex de la parlada: no renuncia mai a escriure res. Quan vaig llegir les primeres columnes de l'Ivan Tubau, ho vaig tenir molt clar: jo algun dia, quan fos gran, faria articles com aquells. Jo diria que és més antinacionalista espanyol que antinacionalista català, encara que és antinacionalista de tots els nacionalismes. Ha aconseguit puntuar sempre els seus textos d'acord amb l'entonació, de tal manera que es poden llegir en veu alta sense que l'oient perdi cap matis. Vaig aprendre a escriure articles amb aquest llibre, i ara me'ls paguen a un quart de quilo cada un. Amb ironia, sarcasme i cachondeo, dóna a entendre que el nacionalisme és una estupidesa i el Freedom for Catatonía, que jo vaig cantar amb unció, un eslògan de pa sucat amb oli. Els articles aquí recollits són dels més brillants, incisius i amens que poden llegir-se. No conec gaires periodistes tan preocupats per la llengua dels seus textos, i molt pocs escriptors que marquin tan de prop els correctors com ho fa ell. Un marcatge implacable, que demostra un gran coneixement de la normativa: només els qui la dominen es poden permetre el luxe de transgredir-la. Aquests textos han motivat moltes cartes en pro i en contra als diaris, i això és bo. Però ningú li ha disparat al seu autor un tret a la cama, i això encara és millor: si com deia De Gaulle els antipatriotes també eren França, Ivan Tubau també és Catalunya. ¿De qui és cada una d'aquestes frases? ¿D'un director i presentador de telenotícies al Canal 33? ¿D'un ex-senador de l'Entesa dels Catalans? ¿D'una doctora en psicologia que parlava de sexe a la televisió? ¿Del cap d'edició i correcció del diari Avui? ¿D'un professor de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra? ¿D'un xarnego agraït contractat per l'Àngel Colom? ¿Del fundador lingüístic de Catalunya Ràdio? Qui llegeixi aquest llibre ho sabrà, i a sobre podrà aprendre a escriure articles en català.
