Life in America often rushes past us at a blazing speed. In this provocative and witty book, Steven Michael Hubele chronicles some of the events in his life spent with his fifty-year relationship with his father and twenty-five years of experience as a father to his two daughters. His story is full of all the minor disasters and wonderful coincidences that characterize life in the Midwest. Before his life as a published author, Steve took notes and kept track of interesting and sometimes tragic events, but always tried to keep a sense of humor. Brought to life are stories about work, playing golf, and learning how to act from his father in life and in sickness. In his trademark celebratory comment, each story ends with the words, The memories remain. The hope for reading this book is that it brings some peace as a source of merriment. Yesterdays failures and triumphs earn tomorrows joys. Steven Michael Hubele is the author of Almost Full Circle. He lives in Affton, a modest community in St. Louis County, Missouri. He continues to tell more stories and make more memories for his two daughters, just as his father did for him. Author photograph: by Allison Hubele

Incredible stories from those who thrived in the Wild West. The “mountain men” were the hunters and trappers who fiercely strode the Rocky Mountains in the early to mid-1800s. They braved the elements in search of the skins of beavers and other wild animals, to sell or barter for goods. The lifestyle of the mountain men could be harsh, existing as they did among animals, and spending most of their days and nights living and camping out in the great unexplored wilds of the Rockies. Life outdoors presented many threats, not least among them Native Americans, who were hostile to the mountain men encroaching on the area for their own purposes. For a certain kind of pioneer, this risk and more were outweighed by the benefits of living free, without the restrictions and boundaries of “civilized” settlements. Included in this collection are tales from great writers, including: Washington Irving Stanley Vestal Osborne Russell Francis Parkman Jr. And many more! In The Adventures of the Mountain Men, New York Times bestselling author Stephen Brennan has compiled many of the best stories about the mountain men—the most daring exploits, the death-defying chances taken to hunt big game, the clashes with the arrows of Native Americans, and also the moments when the men were struck by the incomparable beauty of the unsullied, majestic Rocky Mountains.

A study of the ancient practice of Andean head shaping and its cultural connotations. In the late sixteenth century, Spanish conquerors in Peru’s Colca Valley encountered the Collaguas and Cavanas, Indigenous people who undertook a striking form of body modification: Collaguas bound the heads of infants and children so that their skulls grew narrow and elongated, and Cavanas so that their skulls became wide and squat. Head shaping resulted in craniums that resembled two specific mountains associated with the groups. For Europeans, shaped skulls immediately and durably became a marker of territorialized ethnic difference. The Mountain Embodied offers a more nuanced story. Having studied hundreds of samples of human remains, bioarchaeologist Matthew Velasco argues that reducing head shape to a mere ethnic marker is a colonial invention. Instead, the social significance of head shaping was protean and intersected with other structures of difference, such as gender, kinship, and status, influencing experience within the community. Head shaping, then, was one factor in the construction of a locally embedded kind of subjectivity. An outsider could deduce group identity from head shape, but for practitioners, head shaping reflected something else: nothing less than personhood itself.

This updated and expanded new edition continues the theme of the second edition that presents a framework by which the reader can gain a broader and deeper understanding of the issues involved with campus violence incidents. In order to understand the current state of campus violence, two sources of information must be considered—the factual and the theoretical. The editors of this book bring together a powerful team of practitioners and scholars from across multiple disciplines to discuss the critical elements associated with campus violence. With the rise of public protest and civil unrest, this book provides a detailed examination of prevention, intervention, and long-term responses to campus violence. Divided into four parts, Part I guides the reader in understanding violence and how it impacts college campuses. Facts, theories, institutional culture, and threats of violence are included. Part II explores how campuses can invest in human infrastructure, prevention, policies, safety strategies, intervention, and response efforts to make campuses safer. Part III covers the ways in which college violence occurs within the context of the law, alcohol, social media, and speakers, including speech and protest. Part IV discusses the specific strains of gender-based violence, suicide, hate crimes, hateful violence, cyberbullying, hazing, kinetic insider violence, and mass shootings. High profile cases provide many examples of catalyst events that changed the paths for institutions of higher education. This user-friendly resource provides college personnel, students, and parents with directed, well-researched strategies to prepare for the possibility of tragedy before it strikes. This unique text will be a valuable tool for college administrators, journalists, psychologists, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys.
