Ceramic materials in the form of coatings can significantly improve the functionality and applications of other engineering materials. Due to a wide range of controllable features and various deposition methods, it is possible to create tailored substrate–coating systems that meet the requirements of modern technologies. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the relationships between the structures, morphology and the properties of ceramic coatings and expand the base of scientific knowledge about them. This book contains a series of fourteen articles which present research on the production and properties of ceramic coatings designed to improve functionality for advanced applications.

Functional Glasses and Glass-Ceramics: Processing, Properties and Applications provides comprehensive coverage of the current state-of-the-art on a range of material synthesis. This work discusses the functional properties and applications of both oxide and non-oxide glasses and glass-ceramics. Part One provides an introduction to the basic concept of functional glasses and glass-ceramics, while Part Two describes the functional glasses and glass-ceramics of oxide systems, covering functionalization of glasses by 3d transition metal ion doping, 4f rare earth metal ion doping, crystallization, laser irradiation micro fabrication, incorporation of nanometals, the incorporation of semiconductor coatings, the functionalization for biomedical applications, solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) sealants, and display devices, and from waste materials. Part Three describes functional glasses and glass-ceramics of non-oxide systems, covering functional chalcogenide and functional halide glasses, glass-ceramics, and functional bulk metallic glasses. The book contains future outlooks and exercises at the end of each chapter, and can be used as a reference for researchers and practitioners in the industry and those in post graduate studies. Provides a comprehensive text that explores the field of both functional glass and glass ceramics Presents an in-depth discussion on the definition of a functional glass Includes discussions of advanced processing, functional properties, and functional applications of a wide array of functional glasses and glass-ceramics Written using a systematic approach that can only be accomplished through an authored work

As a potter who deals with consumer products, I use different approaches in my making process to practice methods that have less of an impact on the Earth's resources. In this thesis, I will be investigating two different perspectives to achieve this. Repurposing once used vegetable oil as a fuel for firing the kiln and designing a burner that is efficient and reliable, I have attempted to lessen the impact that manufacturing ceramic pots has on the ecosystem. The values that I hold about the environment are reflected in the practice of making pots with an ethically sound approach. Creating ceramic products that incorporate elements of play into the ergonomics of the pieces, I am investigating the concept of humor as a tool to establish better practices within my community. Using adapted methodologies, the ceramics vessels that I produce invite a communication to take place between the user and myself.

What Makes A Potter written by Janet Koplos and has been published by Schiffer Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-10-28 with Crafts & Hobbies categories.

Why are people still handmaking utilitarian pottery in the 21st century? Doesn't industrial production take care of all our storage and cooking and serving needs? Yet, in all corners of the US, pottery is being discovered, studied, developed, produced, sold, collected, used, displayed, preserved, and passed down. Answers to these questions are vividly realized in the words of potters themselves--funny, philosophical, intense, and inspiring life narratives captured by Janet Koplos, an award-winning art critic who has followed American studio ceramics for the last four decades. The depth and breadth of this book is unprecedented in American craft history. Fifty individuals or pairs of potters offer their experiences, their thoughts, and their lessons learned. When art is at home in the kitchen, dining room, or living room, as is the case with functional pottery, the impact on our lives can be profound.
