La teoría del autocontrol ha tenido un impacto sobresaliente en Criminología. Propuesta originariamente en 1990 en A general theory of crime por Michael Gottfredson y Travis Hirschi mantiene que el autocontrol bajo es la causa y explicación fundamental del delito a nivel individual, a la vez que realiza predicciones muy audaces, como las relativas a su generalidad, por ejemplo a lo largo de contextos socioculturales. En el presente volumen colectivo se pone a prueba la generalidad de la teoría del autocontrol en particular en tests empíricos con datos de Colombia, Ecuador, España y Venezuela. De este modo se une a las cada vez más habituales investigaciones que han testado ésta y otras teorías en ámbitos socioculturales muy distintos entre sí y respecto a los Estados Unidos, de donde proceden, con alguna notable excepción, las más influyentes explicaciones del delito. De modo más general, este esfuerzo colectivo desea también con-tribuir al conocimiento, crítica y evaluación de las explicaciones más importantes sobre el comportamiento criminal —entre las que se encuentra la teoría general del delito—, así como al desarrollo de la Criminología positiva mayoritaria en los países de habla his-pana. Ambos campos se encuentran íntimamente relacionados, a la vez que su cultivo en nuestros países es pobre. El presente volumen ha sido estructurado en torno a cuatro partes, tras la introducción inicial por los editores Serrano Maíllo y Birk-beck: la teoría general del delito y sus críticos (I); la medición del autocontrol (II); el test de la teoría (III); y la cuestión del género en Gottfredson y Hirschi (IV). En conjunto, los diversos estudios permiten al lector realizar una evaluación amplia de los alcances de la teoría general del delito cuando ésta se considera a la luz de datos provenientes de diferentes muestras de estudiantes adolescentes o jóvenes adultos de varios países de habla hispana. Los resultados indican que la teoría ofrece una explicación prometedora para la conducta delictiva, a la vez que plantean interrogantes sobre diversos aspectos relevantes. Los doce autores que presentan sus trabajos en las páginas que siguen proceden de seis universidades diferentes y representan a otras tantas nacionalidades.

What is the nature of the material world? And how are its fundamental constituents to be described? These questions are of central concern to contemporary philosophers, and in their attempt to answer them, they have begun reconsidering traditional views about metaphysical structure, including the Aristotelian view that material objects are best described as 'hylomorphic compounds'--that is, objects composed of both matter (hyle) and form (morphe). In this major new study, Jeffrey E. Brower presents and explains the hylomorphic conception of the material world developed by Thomas Aquinas, the most influential Aristotelian of the Middle Ages. According to Brower, the key to understanding Aquinas's conception lies in his distinctive account of intrinsic change. Beginning with a novel analysis of this account, Brower systematically introduces all the elements of Aquinas's hylomorphism, showing how they apply to material objects in general and human beings in particular. The resulting picture not only sheds new light on Aquinas's ontology as a whole, but provides a wholesale alternative to the standard contemporary accounts of material objects. In addition to presenting and explaining Aquinas's views, Brower seeks wherever possible to bring them into dialogue with the best recent literature on related topics.
