José Raúl Capablanca, nació en La Habana el 18 de noviembre de 1888, fue un extraordinario caso de ajedrecista precoz que llegó a ser campeón mundial. A los cuatro años de edad, después que su padre, oficial del ejército, concluyó una partida de ajedrez que estaba jugando con un amigo, el pequeño Capablanca insistió en mostrarle a su progenitor que una jugada antes había movido mal un caballo, desde una casilla blanca a otra del mismo color. Comprobado esto, el padre le preguntó al niño cómo sabía el movimiento de las piezas, a lo que el pequeño contestó que viéndolos jugar en sus tertulias diarias, y agregó que podía ganarle una partida. Entre risueño y curioso, el padre jugó con José Raúl y... perdió. El gran maestro español de aquella época, Celso Golmayo, tomó gran interés por el niño y jugó muchas veces con él, confesando que no podía darle la ventaja de un caballo. El progreso de José Raúl fue rapidísimo, y a los doce años les ganaba a los más fuertes jugadores de Cuba, obteniendo el campeonato del principal club de La Habana al vencer al fuerte ajedrecista cubano Juan Corzo por 4 a 2 y 6 tablas.
