Excerpt from Fungous Diseases of the Honeybee The study of diseases of bees due to fungi has been much later in its development than the study of those caused by bacteria. Much the greater share of the attention of investigators of bee diseases has been given to the two serious bacterial brood diseases, American foul brood and European foulbrood, caused respectively by B lemme and B. Pluton. In America only two reports are on record of diseases of bees and their brood caused by hyphomycetous fungi. In 1896 Howard of Texas, described a new brood disease which he called pickled brood or white fungus, caused by a species of Aspergillus to which he gave the name Aspergillus Two years later he described (15) the same disease as occurring in both pupae and adult bees and stated his belief that this disease had been mistakenly diagnosed by beekeepers as paralysis. In both reports Howard gives descriptions and illustrations of the disease, which he called pickled brood or white fungus, which are more readily applicable to the disease known as sacbrood than to those caused by fungi. He ascribed this disease to the pathogenic Aspergillus, A. Pollini. The dead larvae are described as at first white and watery, later becoming black and swollen, and finally dry ing down to black scales. In no case was the fungus, which Howard assumes to be the cause of the disease, observed on the larvae, and isolations of the organism were not made. In adult bees the disease is described as causing black, shiny, apparently frozen abdomens. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Fungi of the Bee-Hive Higgins (14) in 1858 published an account of the death of some bees, caused, it was presumed, by a fungus. His description is, unfortunately, insufficient to determine the species which made its appearance on the dead bees, and which he did not name. Excerpt from The Occurrence of Diseases of Adult Bees, II In several instances, before the cause of the Isle of Wight disease was discovered, statements appeared in bee journals of the United States to the effect that the disease is present in this country, but as these records are without value they are not specifically mentioned. The symptoms described by beekeepers of Great Britain for the Isle of Wight disease were so nearly identical with some of those observed for diseases of adult bees in the United States as to make such belief plausible. As has been explained earlier (p. This can not be accepted as evidence that the disease is actually present. Excerpt from Text-Book of the Diseases of Trees Some fifty years ago a number of able investigators, of whom only Saxesen, Th. Hartig, and Ratzeburg need be named here, applied themselves to the study of insects. The life-history of forest insects, their harmfulness or usefulness, soon became the favourite study of many practical foresters, and in a few decades the joint efforts of numerous workers were rewarded by the elevation of Forest Entomology to the position of a much appreciated subject of scientific instruction, which has become the common property of all educated foresters. The case was otherwise with those plant-diseases which cannot be ascribed to the injuries of animals. Their investi gation was delayed until quite recently; for it was only after botanical science, by the aid of its chief instrument, the microscope, had obtained a clear insight into the normal strue ture and vital phenomena of plants, and especially after the study of fungi had been prosecuted in the last few decades by a series of distinguished investigators, that the examination of the phenomena of disease in the life of plants could be undertaken with a prospect of success. Excerpt from Collected Leaflets on Fungus Pests and Allied Diseases of Fruit Trees Unlike insect pests, which are for the most part more or less clearly understood, there is often a certain mystery in the public mind connected with fungi. Their strange form, sudden appear ance and devastating habits are not readily explainable. To the practical fruit grower painful familiarity with their presence soon robs fungus parasites of any mysterious charm, and, by force of circumstances, he is compelled to study them, if it be only their mode of attacking plants and the best methods of keeping them at bay. Whether, however, the origin and} habits are understood or not, it may not be inadvisable to point out at the commencement of this volume the main outlines of the life of any ordinary fungus.
