The volume presents the author’s articles written in the last fifteen years, dealing with the interaction between syntax, functional sentence perspective (information structure) and text in present-day English. It is divided into five parts, I Syntactic Constancy, II Syntax FSP Interface, III FSP and Semantics, IV Syntax, FSP, Text and V Style, which reveal the two facets of functional sentence perspective: syntactic structures as realization forms of the carriers of FSP functions, and the connection of FSP with the level of text. The first and the last two parts frame the content of the volume in treating the role of functional sentence perspective at the syntactic and the textual levels. At the former, FSP is investigated as a potential factor of syntactic divergence between English and Czech, at the latter the role of FSP is examined with respect to theme development, text build-up and style. The points discussed in the other parts concern, among others, the hierarchical relationship between syntax and FSP, the question of potentiality in FSP structure, different realization forms of FSP structure and FSP functions, general and specific questions of word order, with major attention paid to the role of semantics.

Alle Menschen haben das Bedürfnis etwas mitzuteilen, Fragen zu stellen, Aussagen über bestimmte Begebenheiten, Gedanken und Gefühle zu machen,, Befehle zu geben oder auch einfach ihr Wissen zu erweitern. Sprache ist dabei keineswegs ein einfaches Konstrukt, sondern wird durch die zahlreichen Absichten eines Sprechers in der täglichen Konversation geprägt und geformt. Dabei lässt die Form schon oft erkennen, um welche Art von Satz es sich handelt und welche Information am relevantesten für den Hörer ist. Letzteres geschieht nicht nur durch die Reihenfolge der Satzkonstituenten sondern wird zudem noch durch die Satzmelodie und Intonation bewirkt. Dazu betrachten wir zunächst die funktionale Grammatik und grenzen sie dabei von der Generativen Grammatik ab, welche syntaktische Strukturen autonom betrachtet und nicht die Absicht des Sprechers und Verständnis des Hörer in ihre Überlegungen mit einbeziehen. Der zweite Punkt stellt die Definition der Begriffe Thema und Rhema dar, welche für Kohärenz und Weiterführung der Konversation sorgen. Dem schließt sich die Thema- Rhema Gliederung an, welche die kommunikative Funktion von Sätzen beschreibt, die nicht rein syntaktisch erklärbar sind. Darauf folgen die inhaltlichen Faktoren welche den Sprecher dazu veranlassen, etwas als Thema oder Rhema zu wählen. Um von der kontextbezogenen zur satzinternen Betrachtung zu kommen, folgt die Topik- Kommentar- Gliederung, in der näher auf die Topik- Kennzeichnung eingegangen wird. Abschließend wird der Einfluss der Intonation welcher Thema und Rhema markiert geschildert und der, von der normalen Satzstellung abweichende Satz mit einem Kontrastakzent.
