Excerpt from Fur-Farming in Canada Rapid progress has marked the fur-farming industry since the publi cation Of the Commission's first report on the subject a year ago. From all parts Of Canada requests have been received for information and for copies of the report. TO meet this demand it was deemed advisable to issue a revised and enlarged edition, SO as to make the report as up to-date as possible. Assistance in the preparation Of the original report, as well as the revision, has been received from various sources, many of Which it is impossible to acknowledge here. It seems fitting, however, that special mention should be made Of the courtesy and assistance rendered by Mr. Ernest Thompson Seton for helpful suggestions, as well as for permission to reproduce from his Life Histories of Northern Animals, the maps showing the ranges in Canada Of the Red Fox, Raccoon, Mink, American Marten, Skunk, Muskrat, and Beaver. Valuable statistics of fur production and sales were furnished by the Hudson's Bay Co., through the Office of the Canadian High Commissioner, by Messrs. C. M. Lampson co., Messrs. A. And W. Nesbitt, Mr. Emil Brass, Mr. J. D. Whelpley and others. Messrs. Henry and Ernest Poland, of P. R. Poland Sons, London, England, courteously revised a number of tables of statistics, in addition to providing considerable new material. Mr. R. H. Campbell supplied a short article on the Reindeer, Mr. Johann Beetz on the conservation Of game in Quebec, and reports of the Ameri can Breeders' Association, and the Fur News Magazine have been freely quoted. Excerpt from Fox Ranching in Canada Fox-farming is the direct outgrowth of the early attempts of Canadian trappers to hold over foxes, captured out of season, until the animal became full-furred. Experiments conducted in the provinces of Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Quebec and Ontario resulted in fixing the type of the valuable black or silver fox, which is a Sport Of the common red fox. The new industry of fox-farming followed as a natural sequence. Although a few foxes have been kept in confinement in Canada for a great number Of years the expansion of the fox industry did not really begin until 1910. Before this time fox raising was a secret pursuit in which only a few were allowed to participate. The knowledge that the men already engaged in the enterprise were making handsome profits from the sale of the pelts of foxes which they were raising gradually leaked out, and a scramble to get possession of foundation stock became a veritable craz'e. Excerpt from Farm Weeds of Canada The first edition Of Farm Weeds of Canada was distributed free to public libraries, universities, colleges, high schools, rural schools, agri cultural societies and farmers' institutes and clubs. The book was de signed to stimulate interest in the study Of farm weeds in general, their habits of growth and the best methods of combating them. It was distributed with a view to make it conveniently available for the pur pose of reference, to all who are interested in agricultural pursuits but particularly to farmers and pupils Of schools in farming districts. The second edition has been prepared and published to meet the urgent requests from individuals who desire the book for their personal use. The information presented in the text is useful because the illustrations Of weeds and weed seeds make it intelligible to farmers and others who are not expert in the nomenclature of plants. The expense entailed in the preparation, printing and binding of seventy six coloured plates as contained in this volume precludes it from the list of those publications Of the Department Of Agriculture that are distributed generally and free Of charge. The nominal price fixed for its sale will restrict its distribution to those who will preserve and make proper use of it, and will meet a part Of the unusual expense incurred in its issue. Excerpt from Fur Farming in the Province of Quebec: Describing the Most Approved Methods of Propagating Foxes and Other Fur-Bearing Animals in Captivity In selecting the location of a farm or ranch for fox farming, it is desirable to avoid limited quarters in or near a city or town, or even in a. Small village where foxes might be disturbed by visitors, for in such cases they become restless and suspicious and do not breed well. Foxes require very little space and sometimes thrive in enclosures pet more than forty feet square. Some have been successfully raised in stables or other small buildings, but the fur only attains its richest, thickest and most valu able qualities when the animal is kept out-of-doo-rs, and when kind nature furnishes the necessary de gree of warmth in the superior quality of the fur. The enclosures may be but a few yards from a farm-house, or even if visitors are excluded, in a quiet place on the outskirts of a village. A total space of 5 acres is ample for extensiveoperations, and it is not likely that more than 2 acres will be needed for any except a large and long established business. A half acre will accommo date about 6 pairs of foxes, which is quite as many as. A beginner should attempt to handle. The selec tion of ground may depend upon circumstances, but effort should be made to include a few trees or small shrubs. These afford shade and a feeling of seclusion and security to the animals, but should not be high enough or near enough to the fence to enable the foxes to jump from them out of the en closure. Perfectly open ground 'has been used with fair success, and in other cases yards have been situated in thick woods. Neither extreme is to be desired, but many trees are better than none at all. Forthe sake of cleanliness, sandy sod should be selected wherever possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
