On the first day of October 1787, captains John Kendrick and Robert Gray, along with fifty other men - sailors and tradesmen alike - set sail from Boston, soon to be the first Yankees to lay eyes on the lush and resource-rich Northwest Coast of North America. This journey, and Gray's subsequent voyage in 1790, were trading ventures that would lead to little wealth for anyone involved, but would supply future generations with rich stories of encounters between the Native Americans and the traders, of desperate escapades along the coast, and, eventually, the reward to the United States of the Columbia River. Kendrick, on board the Columbia Rediviva, and Gray, on the Lady Washington, maneuvered around treacherous Cape Horn, then sailed north up the western coasts to present-day Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. There they traded with the Indians for the prized sea-otter pelts (called by the Russians "soft gold"). Finally, they would sail for the China ports of Macao and Canton, where they traded the skins for tea and fine china. The American ships had joined a contingent of international vessels (mostly British and Spanish) assembled at Nootka Sound, some to trade, others on voyages of exploration. The two captains eventually would switch ships, and Kendrick would remain on the Northwest Coast, while Gray sailed on to China and to Boston - then back once again. These were the first citizens of the new nation to sail into the Pacific, and the repercussion of their voyages would ring loudly for years to come. The dreamer Kendrick would never return to Boston, choosing to remain on the other side of the world until his death in the Sandwich Islands, late in 1794. The more pragmaticGray would continue his career as a sea captain into the nineteenth century.

This dissertation answers the question of how and why the history of the fur trade in the Columbia River Plateau is understood in the ways in which it is. It examines the construction of memory and commemorations of the fur trade era by different communities for their distinct purposes. The project methodologies include analyses of archival materials and publications created by fur traders and historians who were interested in their lives, and examination of historical monographs and their indexes and sources lists. Fur trade commemorations and public history events were scrutinized, as were newspapers for interviews with the historical actors driving public acts of memory and biographies of these individuals were examined. Artistic representations of the past in films, songs, comic books, advertisements, and greeting cards created are included in the analysis. Peoples understandings of the past are made in daily encounters of its representation, however seemingly trivial they may be. Indigenous Plateau peoples have created histories of the fur trade, and those histories have been largely ignored by settler historians and boosters, resulting in a historiography that has mostly omitted Indigenous voices that were present and speaking to those settlers creating fur trade histories. In the last quarter of the twentieth century, Plateau Indigenous peoples brought their histories into the same public forums where fur trade histories were heard in the region for non-Indigenous people to encounter. Examining the stories people told about the fur trade and why, this dissertation demonstrates that the history of the Columbia River Plateau fur trade has been and continues to be a tool used to further the social, political, and economic desires of its creators, who construct fur trade histories largely in their own image.

A Comparative Analysis Of Two Early Fur Trade Period Sites On The Lower Columbia River Of Oregon And Washington written by Rachel K. Stokeld and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Chinook Indians categories.

The Lower Chinook of the Lower Columbia River are among the first Natives in the region to have direct contact with Euroamericans in the late 1700s. When maritime fur traders arrived on the Columbia River soon after, the Lower Chinook actively engaged in the trade, incorporating foreign traders and goods into the pre-existing inter-tribal trading system. Potentially hundreds of ships visited and two terrestrial fur trade companies operated posts on the Lower Columbia River during the early fur trade period (ca. 1790-1820) but descriptions of their activities and the goods they traded are largely lacking. Archaeological analysis can increase knowledge of little understood periods in history through identifying patterns in material culture and connecting them to socio-historical factors. The purpose of this thesis is to identify variations and similarities within the two earliest fur-trade associated assemblages on the Lower Columbia, one Native and one Euroamerican in context, to address questions regarding the earliest adoption of mass produced European and Chinese material culture among the Lower Columbia Chinook. This will be accomplished by comparative analysis of trade goods imported by Euroamerican traders during the early fur trade period as identified through examination historic records.
