The Future of Liberation Theology envisions a radical new direction for Latin American liberation theology. One of a new generation of Latin American theologians, Ivan Petrella shows that despite the current dominance of 'end of history' ideology, liberation theologians need not abandon their belief that the theological rereading of Christianity must be linked to the development of 'historical projects' - models of political and economic organization that would replace an unjust status quo. In the absence of historical projects, liberation theology currently finds itself unable to move beyond merely talking about liberation toward actually enacting it in society. Providing a bold new interpretation of the current state and potential future of liberation theology, Ivan Petrella brings together original research on the movement, with developments in political theory, critical legal theory and political economy to reconstruct liberation theology's understanding of theology, democracy and capitalism. The result is the recovery of historical projects, thus allowing liberation theologians to once again place the reality of liberation, and not just the promise, at the forefront of their task.

In 1988, many of the world's leading theologians gathered at Maryknoll to honor Gustavo GutiŽrrez, the father of liberation theology. The occasion marked the twentieth anniversary of the Medell'n conference, GutiŽrrez's sixtieth birthday, and publication of a new edition of his enduring classic, A Theology of Liberation. The resulting volume, The Future of Liberation Theology, included over fifty papers presented at that historic gathering. Expanding the View takes key essays from that landmark volume and makes them available for the first time in paperback. From the wealth of material, essays were selected to provide the most comprehensive overview of critical thinking on liberation theology--both its past developments and the challenges it faces in the future. Among the issues addressed: the ways liberation theology has grown and developed in its treatment of popular religion, Marxism, and women's issues, and the contribution of liberation theology to interreligious dialogue, Catholic social teaching, and the struggle for human rights. Critical questions are raised about the future possibilities of liberation theology. Above all, many of the contributors assess the significance of this theology from the Third World for Christians living in the affluent First World. Ideal for classroom use, and essential reading for everyone interested in this vital movement, this volume includes GutiŽrrez's own Expanding the View, which introduces the fifteenth anniversary edition of A Theology of Liberation. Contributors include: Elisabeth Schÿssler Fiorenza, Aloysius Pieris, Arthur McGovern, Franiois Houtart, Harvey Cox, Edward Schillebeeckx, Rosemary Ruether, Penny Lernoux, Leonardo Boff, Johann Baptist Metz, Gregory Baum, JosŽ M'guez Bonino, Pablo Richard, Robert McAfee Brown, and Maria Clara Bingemer.

In this volume illustrious liberation theologians succinctly map the liberation terrain for the new century. Writing from a variety of standpoints - the African American community, feminist struggles, and social locations in Europe, North America, and Latin America - these leading thinkers reflect on the vastly changed context of and challenges to liberation. Their reflections directly address the new situation, especially the emergence of a global market economy, shifting structures of oppression, and the advent of multiculturalism and postmodernism.

In the chaos that is Latin American politics, what role does the Catholic church play with regard to its clergy and its members? How does the church function in Latin America on an everyday, practical level? And how successful has the church been intervening in political matters despite the fact that Latin American countries are essentially Catholic nations? Philip Berryman addresses these timely and challenging issues in this comprehensive.Unlike journalistic accounts, which all too frequently portray liberation theology as an exotic brew of Marxism and Christianity or as a movement of rebel priests bent on challenging church authority, this book aims to get beyond these cliches, to explain exactly what liberation theology is, how it arose, how it works in practice, and its implications. The book also examines how liberation theology functions at the village or barrio level, the political impact of liberation theology, and the major objections to it posed by critics, concluding with a tentative assessment of the future of liberation theology. Author note: Phillip Berryman was a pastoral worker in a barrio in Panama during 1965-73. From 1976 to 1980, he served as a representative for the American Friends Service Committee in Central America. In 1980, he returned from Guatemala to the United States and now lives in Philadelphia.

The publication of this volume marks the Ten Year Anniversary of the Postcolonialism and Religions series. In intersectional and interdisciplinary perspectives, the chapters of this book constitute a complex whole: a volume that does justice to the justice-seeking origins of Latin American Liberation Theology, philosophy, and sociology as it emerged in the 1960s-70s and its development to the present. What drives this book is a common spirit and conviction: Liberation Theologies of the Global South remain relevant to the sociocultural and geopolitical contexts of today, which remain ensconced in the dynamics, exclusions, and resistances that gave rise to Liberation Theologies six decades ago. Today we may speak of interculturality, of borderlands, of in-betweenness, in ways that complicate, confirm, affirm, and interrogate the “underside of history”, and the spaces that are marginalized but de-centered centers of liberation struggle — within, alongside, underneath, over-against societal projects that claim and exclude them, and that represent some of the actual challenges and opportunities to liberation.

Called For Freedom written by Jose Comblin and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-07-01 with Religion categories.

In this frank and honest work, one of the pioneers of liberation theology in Latin America reassesses the movement in light of post-Cold War realities. Comblin outlines a liberative, theological pastoral agenda for now and the decades to come in the face of massive urbanization and the apparent triumph of the global marketplace. With the increasing apartheid of rich and poor, the cause of liberation remains as urgent as ever-perhaps more so. Jose Comblin, already established as a premier contributor to liberation theology, has now provided a work of major new importance. Significant changes have occurred since the inception of liberation theology thirty years ago, and Comblin provides a remarkably comprehensive, critical, and insightful study of economic, political, cultural, and religious developments that liberation theology must address. He offers as well a challenging new theological emphasis on 'freedom.' -Arthur F. McGovern, SJ University of Detroit A 'must read' for all interested in current debates among Latin American liberation theologians, and more broadly, on the eve of the third millennium, for all wondering about the meaning of the good news of the coming of God's reign in history. -Lee Cormie St. Michael's College and the Toronto School of Theology He dispels the rumor that liberation theology is disappearing or dead. This book is about the future of liberation theology, and, if Jose Comblin is right, it will play a vital role in the coming century. -Curt Cadorette University of Rochester

This collection of essays was written to mark the fortieth anniversary of the Second General Conference of Latin American Bishops, which convened at Medellín, Colombia, in 1968. Inspired by the Second Vatican Council and seeking to implement its vision, the bishops viewed the occasion as a decisive one for Latin America, which they saw as standing 'on the threshold of a new epoch in the history of our continent'. It appears to have been a time full of zeal for emancipation, of liberation from every form of servitude, of personal maturity and of collective integration. Forty years later, however, it is appropriate to remember the event and to review the significance of liberation theology in light of all that has happened during the intervening period. The colloquium at the Milltown Institute, Dublin, which led to this book, sought to do precisely that: to establish where liberation theology now stands by questioning whether it really is a significant theological and ecclesial movement or merely a moment whose time has passed, and to investigate its enduring legacy.
