The Many Futures Of A Decision written by Jay Lampert and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-28 with Philosophy categories.

Combining two a central topics in philosophy in the 20th Century, this book considers the ethics and impact of decision-making alongside the philosophy of time. When we make simple decisions, like the decision to wake up at 8 a.m. tomorrow, we make use of a linear model of the future. But when we make open-ended decisions, like the decision to get fitter, or more involved in politics, we presuppose a much more complex model of the future. We project a variety of virtual futures. We can carry out a decision in many different ways at once, which may converge and diverge at different points in time. Using a phenomenological approach, The Many Futures of a Decision explores what we learn about the structure of the future specifically from decision-making. Most theories of decision concentrate on the rationality: the evidence and value assessments that build up grounds for a rational decision. Instead, this book innovatively engages with the nature of the future as a multi-layered decisions project. Through interpretations of the theories of decision in philosophers like Husserl and Heidegger, Schmitt and Habermas, Derrida and Deleuze, along with other decision theories, Lampert develops an original theory of multiple futures.

Beyond Obsolete written by Chris Edwards and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-21 with Education categories.

Americans have seen it all in education over the last twenty years: charter schools, vouchers, private schools, ever-changing sets of technology, increased funding for schools, decreased funding for schools, accountability measures for teachers, and on and on. These schemes never seem to make any real changes in student outcomes. This is because the obsolete educational system is simply not compatible with what we now know about how students learn and how teachers are developed and sustained. Beyond Obsolete: How to Upgrade Classroom Practice and School Structure delves into the history of Western Civilization, shows how a misunderstanding of this history informs our current educational system, and then makes a broad argument for a full-scale upgrade in teacher practice (the software) and school structure (the hardware). If educational reform is to be achieved, then superintendents, assistant superintendents, principals, assistant principals etc. will have to be declared obsolete. Education will have to move beyond them into a new era where teachers are the educational leaders in their field and their classroom practice is compatible with learning theory.

Of all the species that live on this planet, as far as we know, man is the only one capable of awareness; observing the sky, understanding its beauty, and asking questions about the meaning of life and that of death, on the beginning and the end, both about the Universe and man himself. The questions range in all directions: why is there something instead of nothing? Who is the architect of reality, and why does it appear to us as it does, rather than in some other way? What's the point of all this? Where does life originate, and what are the origins of the Universe that encompasses it?This book aims to introduce and address the questions that are often asked and answer with the knowledge that science provides us. Where does all the matter we are made of come from and what constitutes the Universe? Is it true that there is matter and energy whose existence can be intuited only indirectly, as the existence of the wind is deduced from leaves' motion? Einstein was right in his revolutionary description of reality, on nature of space and time, inextricable units in their apparent dichotomy. Does each observer truly observe a 'different' time from another observer? Can we move back and forth in the time? How space and time are modified by astronomical objects such as black holes, and what is the nature of the latter? Will time and the Universe end and how did they originate? The Universe is incredibly vast, housing hundreds of billions of galaxies within the observable Universe alone. Beyond what we can observe, there may exist an unimaginably vast expanse that extends infinitely and beyond our imagination. Our Universe, enormous as it may be, is not the only one. That's all predicted by certain cosmological and physical theories. Is life unique to Earth, or does the Universe harbor other forms of life that remain undiscovered to us?

The Stuff Of Science Fiction written by Gary Westfahl and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-09-27 with Literary Criticism categories.

While students and general readers typically cannot relate to esoteric definitions of science fiction, they readily understand the genre as a literature that characteristically deals with subjects such as new inventions, space, robot and aliens. This book looks at science fiction in precisely this manner, with twenty-one chapters that each deal with a subject that is repeatedly addressed in science fiction of recent centuries. Based on a packet of original essays that the author assembled for his classes, the book could serve as a supplemental textbook in science fiction classes, but also contains material of interest to science fiction scholars and others devoted to the genre. In some cases, chapters offer thorough surveys of numerous works involving certain subjects, such as imagined vehicles, journeys beneath the Earth and undersea adventures, discovering intriguing patterns in the ways that various writers developed their ideas. When comprehensive coverage of ubiquitous topics such as robots, aliens and the planet Mars is impossible, chapters focus on major themes referencing selected texts. A conclusion discusses other science fiction subjects that were omitted for various reasons, and a bibliography lists additional resources for the study of science fiction in general and the topics of each chapter.

These are just some of the fascinating questions posed in this richly illustrated book, which stretches across physics, biochemistry and cosmology. Each chapter considers a separate question and ends either with an answer, or if there is insufficient evidence for an answer, the author gives his ‘best guess’ answer. This new second edition, apart from being updated, also includes answers given by the ChatGPT artificial intelligence chatbot. For every question, be it time travel, multiple Universes, inter-galactic travel, or the end of the world, the author has tried to cover all possibilities before arriving at a conclusion. Everyone will have their own opinion but one thing is certain—Mysteries of the Universe will fascinate, educate, and stimulate. And as a free gift to readers, the author has included an original science fiction short story at the end of the book.

Reel Photos written by Wendy Sterba and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-26 with Performing Arts categories.

Even in an age when the photograph has changed from a physical object into a data file that can be easily manipulated, we tend to believe what we see. But photographs can and do lie. As an object in a film, a photograph’s meaning and function can be even more malleable and deceiving, as new developments in technology are altering how we perceive reality. In Reel Photos: Balancing Art and Truth in Contemporary Film, Wendy Sterba examines the use of photographs in cinema to explore issues of objectivity, subjectivity, fabrication, and fact. This study first looks at the traditional use of the photograph in films such as Blow-Up and then considers similar issues as they relate to the search for truth in detective films like Along Came a Spider, The Bone Collector, and Forgotten. Subsequent chapters explore ambivalence and photographic objectification in films about art photography, including The Governess, Fur, and Closer. Other movies discussed include Inception, Paparazzi, Under Fire, and Somebody Has to Shoot the Picture. By examining the function of the photograph in movies rather than the role of film photography as art, Sterba provides an innovative approach to cinema studies. Utilizing theory in an intelligent but easily understandable way, this book allows readers to re-examine the role of authorship and the value of authentic art. Reel Photos will appeal to students and scholars of cinema, as well as anyone interested in the aesthetics of art and truth in film.
