This book focuses on the multifarious aspects of ‘fuzzy boundaries’ in the field of discourse studies, a field that is marked by complex boundary work and a great degree of fuzziness regarding theoretical frameworks, methodologies, and the use of linguistic categories. Discourse studies is characterised by a variety of theoretical frameworks and disciplinary fields, research methodologies, and lexico-grammatical categories. The contributions in this book explore some of the nuances and implications of the fuzzy boundaries in these areas, resulting in a wide-reaching volume which will be of interest to students and scholars of discourse studies in fields including sociology, linguistics, international relations, philosophy, literary criticism and anthropology.

This book presents a variety of recently developed methods for generating fuzzy rules from data with the help of neural networks and evolutionary algorithms. Special efforts have been put on dealing with knowledge incorporation into neural and evolutionary systems and knowledge extraction from data with the help of fuzzy logic. On the one hand, knowledge that is understandable to human beings can be extracted from data using evolutionary and learning methods by maintaining the interpretability of the generated fuzzy rules. On the other hand, a priori knowledge like expert knowledge and human preferences can be incorporated into evolution and learning, taking advantage of the knowledge representation capability of fuzzy rule systems and fuzzy preference models. Several engineering application examples in the fields of intelligent vehicle systems, process modeling and control and robotics are presented.

This text explores current changes in modern langauges in higher education regarding shifting concepts of knowledge and culture in academia and in society at large. It presents a map of the current state of modern languages in a period largely characterized by the erosion of disciplinary boundaries across the humanities. Contributors (including Christopher Brumfit, Ronald Barnett, Michael Kelly, Susan Bassnett) analyze the relationship between traditional and emerging components of modern languages, ranging from language learning and area studies to relatively new fields such as cultural studies and cross-cultural communication. The book should be of interest to all those involved in shaping modern languages for the 21st century, whether as teachers, learners or researchers.

Philosophical Papers written by Peter Unger and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-03-02 with Philosophy categories.

While well-known for his book-length work, philosopher Peter Unger's articles have been less widely accessible. These two volumes of Unger's Philosophical Papers include articles spanning more than 35 years of Unger's long and fruitful career. Dividing the articles thematically, this first volume collects work in epistemology and ethics, among other topics, while the second volume focuses on metaphysics. Unger's work has advanced the full spectrum of topics at the heart of philosophy, including epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of language and philosophy of mind, and ethics. Unger advances radical positions, going against the so-called "commonsense philosophy" that has dominated the analytic tradition since its beginnings early in the twentieth century. In epistemology, his articles advance the view that nobody ever knows anything and, beyond that, argue that nobody has any reason to believe anything--and even beyond that, they argue that nobody has any reason to do anything, or even want anything. In metaphysics, his work argues that people do not really exist--and neither do puddles, plants, poodles, and planets. But, as Unger has often changed his favored positions, from one decade to the next, his work also advances the opposite, "commonsense" positions: that there are in fact plenty of people, puddles, plants and planets and, quite beyond that, we know it all to be true. On most major philosophical questions, both of these sides of Unger's significant work are well represented in this major two volume collection. Unger's vivid writing style, intellectual vitality, and fearlessness in the face of our largest philosophical questions, make these volumes of great interest not only to the philosophical community but to others who might otherwise find contemporary philosophy dry and technical.
