Approximate reasoning is a key motivation in fuzzy sets and possibility theory. This volume provides a coherent view of this field, and its impact on database research and information retrieval. First, the semantic foundations of approximate reasoning are presented. Special emphasis is given to the representation of fuzzy rules and specialized types of approximate reasoning. Then syntactic aspects of approximate reasoning are surveyed and the algebraic underpinnings of fuzzy consequence relations are presented and explained. The second part of the book is devoted to inductive and neuro-fuzzy methods for learning fuzzy rules. It also contains new material on the application of possibility theory to data fusion. The last part of the book surveys the growing literature on fuzzy information systems. Each chapter contains extensive bibliographical material. Fuzzy Sets in Approximate Reasoning and Information Systems is a major source of information for research scholars and graduate students in computer science and artificial intelligence, interested in human information processing.

The present monograph intends to establish a solid link among three fields: fuzzy set theory, information retrieval, and cluster analysis. Fuzzy set theory supplies new concepts and methods for the other two fields, and provides a common frame work within which they can be reorganized. Four principal groups of readers are assumed: researchers or students who are interested in (a) application of fuzzy sets, (b) theory of information retrieval or bibliographic databases, (c) hierarchical clustering, and (d) application of methods in systems science. Readers in group (a) may notice that the fuzzy set theory used here is very simple, since only finite sets are dealt with. This simplification enables the max min algebra to deal with fuzzy relations and matrices as equivalent entities. Fuzzy graphs are also used for describing theoretical properties of fuzzy relations. This assumption of finite sets is sufficient for applying fuzzy sets to information retrieval and cluster analysis. This means that little theory, beyond the basic theory of fuzzy sets, is required. Although readers in group (b) with little background in the theory of fuzzy sets may have difficulty with a few sections, they will also find enough in this monograph to support an intuitive grasp of this new concept of fuzzy information retrieval. Chapter 4 provides fuzzy retrieval without the use of mathematical symbols. Also, fuzzy graphs will serve as an aid to the intuitive understanding of fuzzy relations.

This book provides concise yet thorough coverage of the fundamentals and technology of fuzzy sets. Readers will find a lucid and systematic introduction to the essential concepts of fuzzy set-based information granules, their processing and detailed algorithms. Timely topics and recent advances in fuzzy modeling and its principles, neurocomputing, fuzzy set estimation, granulation–degranulation, and fuzzy sets of higher type and order are discussed. In turn, a wealth of examples, case studies, problems and motivating arguments, spread throughout the text and linked with various areas of artificial intelligence, will help readers acquire a solid working knowledge. Given the book’s well-balanced combination of the theory and applied facets of fuzzy sets, it will appeal to a broad readership in both academe and industry. It is also ideally suited as a textbook for graduate and undergraduate students in science, engineering, and operations research.

As the systems which form the fabric of modern society become more complex and more interdependent, the need for the understanding of the behavior of such systems becomes increasingly more essential. What are the causes and possible cures for the worldwide inflation which is posing a serious threat to the economic stability and social order of both developed and underdeveloped countries? What are the trade-offs between the urgent need for additional sources of energy and the risks posed by the proliferation of nuclear reactors? How can one devise mass transportation systems which are fast, comforta ble, convenient, and yet not prohibitively expensive? These issues are but some of the more visible problems posed by what might be called the crisis of undercoordination--a crisis rooted in the widen ing gap between the degree of interdependence in the systems of modern society and the degree of coordination which libertarian societies are willing to tolerate. The disquieting implication of this crisis is that to achieve stability through coordination may necessitate the imposition of pervasive controls which may be hard to accept by societies steeped in the democratic tradition. Viewed in this perspective, the need for developing a better understanding of the behavior of large-scale societal systems presents a problem of much more than purely academic importance.

Covering a wide range of notions concerning hesitant fuzzy set and its extensions, this book provides a comprehensive reference to the topic. In the case where different sources of vagueness appear simultaneously, the concept of fuzzy set is not able to properly model the uncertainty, imprecise and vague information. In order to overcome such a limitation, different types of fuzzy extension have been introduced so far. Among them, hesitant fuzzy set was first introduced in 2010, and the existing extensions of hesitant fuzzy set have been encountering an increasing interest and attracting more and more attentions up to now. It is not an exaggeration to say that the recent decade has seen the blossoming of a larger set of techniques and theoretical outcomes for hesitant fuzzy set together with its extensions as well as applications. As the research has moved beyond its infancy, and now it is entering a maturing phase with increased numbers and types of extensions, this book aims to give a comprehensive review of such researches. Presenting the review of many and important types of hesitant fuzzy extensions, and including references to a large number of related publications, this book will serve as a useful reference book for researchers in this field.

Fuzzy set theory has capability to describe the uncertain situations, containing ambiguity and vagueness. Fuzziness is found in our decision, in our thinking, in the way we process information, and particularly in our language. The objective of the book is to study fuzzy mathematics with applications and to characterize new measures of fuzzy information with their various generalizations. The fuzzy information measure deals with vague and ambiguous uncertainties. Large number of measures of entropy, directed divergence and symmetric divergence for probability distributions are known. Analogously, there is a set of variety of measures for fuzzy sets available. Cross-entropy measure is also known as the information discrepancy between two probability distributions. Derived from cross-entropy, fuzzy directed divergence measures the dissimilarity between two fuzzy sets. Various generalized measures of fuzzy information have been introduced. The concept of useful' fuzzy information by attaching utility to the uncertainties of fuzziness and probabilities of randomness has been introduced.
