This work reflects upon the European identity based on Classical and Judaeo-Christian matrices. If today we can claim that there are no substantial cultural differences between the people of the west (Latins, Germanics and Slavs) or amongst those that have inherited a significant part of this culture while not themselves European (Americans, Australians and Africans), this is due to a collective past and to a whole spiritual, ethical-political and civilizational legacy from the Ancient World which was never completely erased. The first nations of modern Europe were formed under the influence of the glorious ruins of Ancient Rome, which was a synthesis of Graeco-Roman civilization and Christian universalism. In the Middle Ages, Boethius, Cassiodorus, Isidore of Seville had an almost symbolic importance due to their role in the transcription, conservation and reuse of Classical writings and with the importance of these works, as a source of knowledge and factor of transmission to successive generations in the west. Amongst them, Thomas Aquinus, faithful interpreter of the Aristotelian-Ciceronian ethics-politics and of Roman law, stands out as a landmark of European thought. The Renaissance was a golden period for the European courts and a high point in the history of humanism and culture in the Iberian Peninsula and for Portugal: because of course it was the Portuguese and the Spanish that discovered and evangelized new worlds, enriched Europe with the first globalization and encounter of cultures on the world scale and helped in the Europeanization of culture. This work conscientiously accompanies a Europe which, in the words of Joaquim de Carvalho, “felt Portugal participate in the great banquet of the European spirit”.

Volume VI of this acclaimed series is now available in an abridged paperback edition. The result of years of work by scholars from all over the world, The UNESCO General History of Africa reflects how the different peoples of Africa view their civilizations and shows the historical relationships between the various parts of the continent. Historical connections with other continents demonstrate Africa's contribution to the development of human civilization. Each volume is lavishly illustrated and contains a comprehensive bibliography. Volume VI covers the period from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the onset of the European "scramble" for colonial territory in the 1880s. In spite of a growing European commercial, religious, and political presence during the first three quarters of the century, outside influences were felt indirectly by most African societies, and they made a number of culturally distinctive attempts to modernize, expand, and develop. These are detailed in four thematic chapters, twenty-three chapters detailing developments in specific areas, and two concluding chapters tracing the African diaspora and assessing the state of the Continent's political, economic, and cultural development on the eve of the European conquest.

The Problem Of Unbelief In The Sixteenth Century written by Lucien Febvre and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1982 with History categories.

Lucien Febvre's magisterial study of sixteenth century religious and intellectual history, published in 1942, is at long last available in English, in a translation that does it full justice. The book is a modern classic. Febvre, founder with Marc Bloch of the journal Annales, was one of France's leading historians, a scholar whose field of expertise was the sixteenth century. This book, written late in his career, is regarded as his masterpiece. Despite the subtitle, it is not primarily a study of Rabelais; it is a study of the mental life, the mentalit , of a whole age. Febvre worked on the book for ten years. His purpose at first was polemical: he set out to demolish the notion that Rabelais was a covert atheist, a freethinker ahead of his time. To expose the anachronism of that view, he proceeded to a close examination of the ideas, information, beliefs, and values of Rabelais and his contemporaries. He combed archives and local records, compendia of popular lore, the work of writers from Luther and Erasmus to Ronsard, the verses of obscure neo-Latin poets. Everything was grist for his mill: books about comets, medical texts, philological treatises, even music and architecture. The result is a work of extraordinary richness of texture, enlivened by a wealth of concrete details--a compelling intellectual portrait of the period by a historian of rare insight, great intelligence, and vast learning. Febvre wrote with Gallic flair. His style is informal, often witty, at times combative, and colorful almost to a fault. His idiosyncrasies of syntax and vocabulary have defeated many who have tried to read, let alone translate, the French text. Beatrice Gottlieb has succeeded in rendering his prose accurately and readably, conveying a sense of Febvre's strong, often argumentative personality as well as his brilliantly intuitive feeling for Renaissance France.
