This book focuses on Gabriel Garcia Marquez's relations with the world of cinema. Far from being an occasional occupation, García Márquez's film work forms an intrinsic part of his overall aesthetic and literary poetics. The book's primary aim is to present a detailed study of Garcia Márquez's wide-ranging filmography, which has never received a comprehensive, systematic analysis. Rocco argues that it should be recognised as an integral part of the author's narrative output, and brought into the mainstream of studies concerning his literary activity. The first part of the book reconstructs the trajectory of Garcia Marquez's career in cinema and his connections with the world of film. The second part looks at all the screenplays written by García Márquez on which actual films have been based. These are examined chronologically, but also analysed according to thematic and aesthetic concerns and placed in relation to the novels and short stories with which they are 'twinned' in terms of the film product. The first comprehensive biography of the author of One Hundred Years Solitude and Love in a Time of Cholera - the most popular international novelist of the last fifty years. 'Gabriel García Márquez once remarked that "every self-respecting writer should have an English biographer". He could have asked for none more accomplished than Gerald Martin' Financial Times Gabriel García Márquez, author of the modern classic One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera, is one of the greatest and most popular writers of the late-twentieth century. As Gerald Martin tells the story of the author's fascinating rise to wealth and international fame, he reveals the tensions in García Márquez's life between celebrity and literary quality, between politics and writing, and between power, solitude and love. Interviewing more than three hundred people including Fidel Castro, Felipe González, Carlos Fuentes and Mario Vargas Llosa, the author's large family as well as 'Gabo' himself, Martin immerses himself in García Márquez's world. This at first 'tolerated' and now 'official' biography is as gripping and revealing as the writer's journalism and as complex and involving as any of his fiction.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez in Retrospect gathers fifteen essays by noted scholars in the fields of Latin American literature, politics, and theater. The volume offers broad overviews of the Colombian author’s total body of work, along with closer looks at some of his acknowledged masterpieces. The Nobel laureate’s cultural contexts and influences, his variety of themes, and his formidable legacy (Hispanic, U.S., world-wide) all come up for consideration. New readings of One Hundred Years of Solitude are further complemented by fresh, stimulating, highly detailed examinations of his later novels (Chronicle of a Death Foretold, The General in His Labyrinth, Of Love and Other Demons) and stories (Strange Pilgrims). Further attention is focused on “Gabo’s” labors as journalist and as memoirist (Living to Tell the Tale), and to his sometime relationships with the cinema and the stage. Reactions to his enormous stature on the part of younger writers, including recent signs of backlash, are also given thoughtful scrutiny. Feminist and ecocritical interpretations, plus lively discussions of Gabo’s artful use of humor, character’s names, and even cuisine, are to be found here as well. In the wake of García Márquez’s passing away in 2014, this collection of essays serves as a fitting tribute to one of the world’s greatest literary figures of the twentieth century.

To date, the Nobel Prize-winning author has written more than twenty works, including novels, novellas, short stories, and nonfiction, which have resulted in numerous adaptations as plays and films. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Although García Márquez has permeated the literary world and has been just as equally embraced, his career has not been without controversy. Last September of 2011, The Guardian reported copies of García Márquez's book, News of a Kidnapping, had sold out in Iran because of comments by opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi, who was reported in The Guardian as saying the book's account of kidnappings in Colombia as "an accurate reflection of his life under house arrest." News of a Kidnapping gives the account of the kidnappings of prominent Colombians in the 1990s under the direction of Pablo Escobar. A piece in The Atlantic by William Kennedy uncovers the financial strain during this period for the family, and how Mercedes got the family through it by selling most of the couple's possessions and borrowing twelve thousand dollars from family and friends. García Márquez told Kennedy he was unaware of how Mercedes was able to provide during this time, but never asked any questions. Yet a supply of whiskey and "[g]ood Scotch" was always on hand for the writer and future Nobel Prize winner in his Mexico City "Cave of the Mafia" writing space, where he spent eight to ten hours a day writing. Gabriel García Márquez’s novel One Hundred Years of Solitude seemed destined for obscurity upon its publication in 1967. The little-known author, small publisher, magical style, and setting in a remote Caribbean village were hardly the usual ingredients for success in the literary marketplace. Yet today it ranks among the best-selling books of all time. Translated into dozens of languages, it continues to enter the lives of new readers around the world. How did One Hundred Years of Solitude achieve this unlikely success? And what does its trajectory tell us about how a work of art becomes a classic? Ascent to Glory is a groundbreaking study of One Hundred Years of Solitude, from the moment García Márquez first had the idea for the novel to its global consecration. Using new documents from the author’s archives, Álvaro Santana-Acuña shows how García Márquez wrote the novel, going beyond the many legends that surround it. He unveils the literary ideas and networks that made possible the book’s creation and initial success. Santana-Acuña then follows this novel’s path in more than seventy countries on five continents and explains how thousands of people and organizations have helped it to become a global classic. Shedding new light on the novel’s imagination, production, and reception, Ascent to Glory is an eye-opening book for cultural sociologists and literary historians as well as for fans of García Márquez and One Hundred Years of Solitude.
