La vinculación entre Gabriela Mistral y seis presidentes de la República es materia central de estas páginas. Ella mantuvo correspondencia frecuente con dos de ellos –Pedro Aguirre Cerda y Eduardo Frei Montalva–, cuya lectura permite ahora un interesante acercamiento al fuero interno de la Nobel de Literatura 1945. Es autor de más de una quincena de libros, entre ellos El año de la ira (Bravo y Allende Editores 2003, Catalonia 2013); Bolaño antes de Bolaño. Diario de una residencia en México (Editorial Catalonia, Santiago, 2007) y Siete presidentes de Chile en la vida de Gabriela Mistral ( Catalonia, 2009) Ha sido presidente de la Sociedad de Escritores de Chile (1989-1991), crítico literario de las revistas Ercilla y Paula y de los diarios El Mercurio, Las Últimas Noticias y Austral de Valdivia; director del taller de poesía de la Fundación Pablo Neruda; representante del Presidente de la República en el Consejo Nacional del Libro y la Lectura (1994-2001). Es presidente de la Fundación Premio Nobel Gabriela Mistral.

The Nobel Prize–winning poet Gabriela Mistral is celebrated by her native Chile as the “mother of the nation” even though she spent most of her life in Mexico, Europe, and the United States. Throughout the Spanish-speaking world and especially in Chile, Mistral was characterized as a sad, traditionally Catholic spinster. Yet her voluminous correspondence with Doris Dana, long believed to be her secretary, reveals that the two women were lovers from 1948 until Mistral’s death in 1957. These letters, published in Spanish in 2010 and now translated for the first time into English, provide insight into her work as a poet and illuminate her perspectives on politics, especially war and human rights. The correspondence also sheds light on the poet’s personal life and corrects the long-standing misperceptions of her as a lonely, single, heterosexual woman.
