Nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges übernahmen viele Frauen eine aktive Rolle in der Gesellschaft. Dies verstanden sie als Beitrag zur grundlegenden Demokratisierung Deutschlands. Gabriele Strecker (1904-1983) war eine von ihnen. Sie gab ihren Beruf als Ärztin auf und wurde Leiterin des Frauenfunks bei Radio Frankfurt, später Hessischer Rundfunk. Ihr Ziel war es, Frauen zu informieren, zu bilden und diese mit dem neuen Staatsmodell vertraut zu machen. Als erste deutsche Frau nahm sie 1946 an einem internationalen Frauenkongress in den USA teil und knüpfte so an das abgerissene internationale Band an, welches die Frauenbewegung der Weimarer Republik gepflegt hatte. Darüber hinaus engagierte sie sich in zahlreichen Frauenorganisationen, hielt Vorträge und schrieb Sachbücher. 1948 wurde sie Mitglied der CDU, wurde Landtagsabgeordnete in Hessen und schließlich Mitglied im Bundesvorstand. Dieses Buch zeichnet den Lebensweg von Gabriele Strecker nach und beschäftigt sich mit ihren Schriften und Vorträgen. Es zeichnet ein faszinierendes Frauenleben in der Zeit von 1920 bis 1980 nach und bietet einen spannenden Einblick in die Gedankenwelt einer frauenpolitischen Aktivistin.

In an age of digital communications, where radio, satellite, television and computing have come together to allow instant access to information and entertainment from around the globe, it is sometimes easy to overstate the break with the recent past that these developments imply. However, from a historical perspective, it is important to recognise that the national dimensions of communications, including broadcasting, have always been framed within different sets of international political, economic, cultural, and technological relationships. Television, so easily seen as the last technology to succumb to the effects of internationalisation subsequent to the technical and political changes of the late twentieth century, was in fact, from the outset, embedded in international interactions. In recent years, a focus has been placed on the longstanding sets of transnational relationships in place in the years after World War II, when television established itself as the dominant form of mass communication in Europe and America. Recent research has adopted a comparative approach to television history, which has examined the interactions within Europe and between Europe and America from the 1950s onwards. In addition, there has been increasing interest in the idea of television in the Anglophone world, looking at transatlantic interactions from the early phases of the development of the technology, through the growing market for formats in the 1950s and outwards, to connections with Australia and Hong Kong in these years. The essays in this collection contribute to this area by bringing together, in one volume, work which focuses on both national developments in UK and US broadcasting in the 1950s, to allow for reflection on how those systems were developing and being understood within those societies, and raise issues about the ways in which the two systems interacted and can be usefully compared. Some contributions deliberately focus on international issues, while others embed the international dimension within them, and still others offer a critical commentary on developments during the 1950s. The book will appeal primarily to students and researchers in media and communication studies, television studies, radio studies, and history, but will also be of interest to all who have an interest in developments in communication in the post-war period.

In most European countries, the horrific legacy of 1939–45 has made it quite difficult to remember the war with much glory. Despite the Anglo-American memory narrative of saving democracy from totalitarianism and the Soviet epic of the Great Patriotic War, the fundamental experience of war for so many Europeans was that of immense personal losses and often meaningless hardships. The anthology at hand focuses on these histories between the victors: on the cases of Hungary, Estonia, Poland, Austria, Finland, and Germany and on the respective, often gendered experiences of defeat. The book’s chapters underline the asynchronous transition to peace in individual experiences, when compared to the smooth timelines of national and international historiographies. Furthermore, it is important to note that instead of a linear chronology, both personal and collective histories tend to return back to the moments of violence and loss, thus forming continuous cycles of remembrance and forgetting. Several of the authors also pay specific attention to the constructed and contested nature of national histories in these cycles. The role of these ‘in-between’ countries – and even more their peoples’ multifaceted experiences – will add to the widening European history of the aftermath, thereby challenging the conventional dichotomies and periodisations. In the aftermath of the seventieth anniversary of 1945, it is still too early to regard the post-war period as mere history; the memory politics and rhetoric of the Second World War and its aftermath are again being used and abused to serve contemporary power politics in Europe
