En 1565, un barco de grandes dimensiones salió del puerto filipino de Manila con destino a Acapulco, en la costa occidental de México. A pesar de su importancia en el comercio internacional de la época, este fenómeno histórico del Galeón de Manila (también conocido como Galeón de Acapulco o Nao de China) es todavía bastante desconocido. Todos los expertos destacan los numerosos intercambios que se produjeron durante siglos gracias a estas grandes embarcaciones comerciales. Hasta Manila llegaban por aquel entonces productos del sur de China, Japón, Indochina, India y todo el Sudesde Asiático. Los grandes barcos que partían de Filipinas, salían llenos de especias (como la pimienta, el clavo o la canela), porcelana, marfil, laca, telas (sobre todo seda), alfombras, biombos y jarrones. Ante las dificultades de llegar a América atravesando el Océano Índico y el Atlántico, esta ruta entre Manila y Acapulco (dominada y gestionada por el Reino de España) se convirtió en una gran ruta de intercambios económicos y culturales entre los tres continentes.
