En 1863 Rosalía publica "Cantares gallegos", cuyo prólogo contiene un alegato reivindicativo de Galicia y sus gentes. En cuanto a la intención declarada por Rosalía, podríamos resumirla como el propósito de cantar las bellezas de su tierra, los encantos del paisaje de Galicia y sus gentes, dando a conocer algunas de sus poéticas costumbres, que conservan cierta frescura patriarcal y primitiva, y borrando así las visiones denigratorias. Un propósito que lleva aparejado el empleo y la defensa de la lengua gallega: mostrar, dice, que nuestro dialecto dulce y melodioso es tan adecuado como el primero para todo tipo de versificación, muy lejos de esa versión degradada de la lengua de la que algunos hacen mofa. Y es que la escritora tenía como única pauta la oralidad: su gallego es el que oía hablar a su alrededor, lo que imprime a los poemas de Rosalía esa tan loada naturalidad, sencillez y acierto, o verdad.
