John Galsworthy (1867-1933), novelist and dramatist, is most widely known as the author of The Forsyte Saga, but recent productions testify to the power that his plays still exert over modern audiences and the strength and relevance of the issues he raise In Strife, Galsworthy deals with industrial relations; in Justice, with prison life - it was one of the few plays to effect real reforms. The Eldest Son is also about injustice - one law for the rich, another for the poor; The Skin Game, Galsworthy's first commercial success, presents class conflict; while Loyalties, 'a crime drama', is about division and prejudice. John Galsworthy is a winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature

Recent productions on stage, television and radio - notably Strife at the National Theatre - testify to the pwoer that Galsworthy's plays can still exert over modern audiences. the moral and social issues he raised in the theatre - more sharply than in his novels - are still alive today. This volume offers the cream of his dramatic output, with an introduction by Benedict Nightingale, drama critic of the New Statesman.

'Plays: Fourth Series' is a series of short plays written by John Galsworthy. Titles featured inside include 'A Bit O' Love', 'The Foundations', and 'The Skin Game'. The first story in the book is the play 'A Bit O'Love' which begins at Ascension Day in a village of the West. In the low paneled hall-sitting room of the Burlacombe's farmhouse on the village green, Michael Strangway, a clerical collar round his throat and a dark Norfolk jacket on his back, is playing the flute before a very large framed photograph of a woman, which is the only picture on the walls. His age is about thirty-five his figure thin and very upright and his clean-shorn face thin, upright, narrow, with long and rather pointed ears; his dark hair is brushed in a coxcomb off his forehead. A faint smile hovers about his lips that Nature has made rather full and he has made thin, as though keeping a hard secret; but his bright gray eyes, dark round the rim, look out and upwards almost as if he were being crucified. There is something about the whole of him that makes him seen not quite present. A gentle creature, burnt within.

"Five Tales" by John Galsworthy is a group of brief testimonies that offers readers a glimpse into the complexities of human nature and society. Each story gives a unique narrative, exploring themes of affection, betrayal, class battle, and the pursuit of happiness. In "The First and Last," Galsworthy delves into the lives of strangers who shape a sudden bond throughout an educate journey, most effective to be torn aside via the tough realities of their respective occasions. "A Stoic" follows the tale of a younger man who grapples with the ethical dilemmas of his time, in the end deciding on a path of integrity and selflessness. "The Apple Tree" examines the dynamics of a strained marriage, while "The Juryman" offers a poignant mirrored image on the nature of justice and the human capability for empathy. Finally, "Indian Summer of a Forsyte" revisits the characters from Galsworthy's renowned Forsyte Saga, providing readers a bittersweet glimpse into the later years of their lives. Through brilliant prose and compelling characterizations, Galsworthy crafts a collection this is both concept-upsetting and emotionally resonant. "Five Tales" is a testomony to Galsworthy's mastery of the short story form and his keen perception into the complexities of the human circumstance.
