Concern about the whereabouts of his absent brother-in-law brings Jake Lockridge to the Arizona town of Piedmont. Upon arriving in Piedmont, he realizes his concern was well-founded. Miguel has been framed for the murder of the son of a powerful rancher named Thurston and is condemned to hang. Jake breaks Miguel out of jail and the two of them head for the mountains, where they're pursued by the rancher, his sons, and a crooked sheriff. Along the way they find allies in an old friend named Decker and a rancher named Gebhardt. Jake is determined to expose Wade Thurston's real killer, but first he has to survive. After a confrontation that ends in Miguel's capture, Jake is left for dead. He rallies and goes on the offensive. Back in Piedmont, he confronts his enemies in order to save Miguel, once more, from the hangman's noose.

Early in his rise to enlightenment, man invented a concept that has since been variously viewed as a vice, a crime, a business, a pleasure, a type of magic, a disease, a folly, a weakness, a form of sexual substitution, an expression of the human instinct. He invented gambling. Recent advances in the field, particularly Parrondo's paradox, have triggered a surge of interest in the statistical and mathematical theory behind gambling. This interest was acknowledge in the motion picture, "21," inspired by the true story of the MIT students who mastered the art of card counting to reap millions from the Vegas casinos. Richard Epstein's classic book on gambling and its mathematical analysis covers the full range of games from penny matching to blackjack, from Tic-Tac-Toe to the stock market (including Edward Thorp's warrant-hedging analysis). He even considers whether statistical inference can shed light on the study of paranormal phenomena. Epstein is witty and insightful, a pleasure to dip into and read and rewarding to study. The book is written at a fairly sophisticated mathematical level; this is not "Gambling for Dummies" or "How To Beat The Odds Without Really Trying." A background in upper-level undergraduate mathematics is helpful for understanding this work. Comprehensive and exciting analysis of all major casino games and variants Covers a wide range of interesting topics not covered in other books on the subject Depth and breadth of its material is unique compared to other books of this nature Richard Epstein's website: www.gamblingtheory.net

Whether it be one pound on the National Lottery or a million pounds on the turn of a card, the instinct to bet is the same. Over the centuries there have been many strange gamblers – and even more strange gambles – and in this unique collection of punts and punters, Graham Sharpe reveals fearless, flamboyant and fantastic flutters. Some of the most extraordinary bets include the male gambler who had a boob job to win a big bet; the gambler who set off to walk round the world wearing an iron mask to land a wager; the man who could genuinely dream winners. Sharpe is also haunted by a couple of ghostly gambles, and looks at the betting propensities of US Presidents – including one who gambled away the White House's finest china. Celebrities who indulge in strange betting practices are unmasked, too – the Marx Brothers, Ben Affleck, James Bond, Kerry Packer, Richard Burton, Oscar Wilde, Professor Stephen Hawking, to name a few. All the sacred traditions affirm that there exists in all humans an instinctive "voice of wisdom" we call intuition meaning "see within". This gift is different from our ordinary seeing of the physical world. Intuition is when the never learned is suddenly known. We have thoughts, creative input and help without thinking. Intuition is free of effort...free for the taking...the only such! Intuition's source hides from science. It is a way of knowing that is entirely different from logical, rational thought. Herein is a chapter on "Whole Brain Winning" which clearly explains one of the most captivating physiological discoveries of this century involving training and intermeshing the activities of both the right and left sides of your brain, and how this can increase your enjoyment of the leisure of gambling. Gambling, like intuition, is universal. Archaeologists, sifting through historic sites, uncover evidence that as long ago as 40,000 B.C.E. our ancestors threw bones, sticks and shells in trials of chance. Soldiers in the Bible threw lots [dice] for Jesus' robe. The thrill of gambling means to experience a quirky, quivering feeling of inner excitement which can be augmented by the tips and tales in this book. One funny thing about gambling is research has found that a happy mood elevates our intuitive scores. How can this book add to your pleasure in the new leisure paradigm of gambling which is now more popular than baseball? It explains and word-illustrates the many quirky modes of enjoying this ever-increasing national pastime. Here you will find new ideas about luck where you do little or nothing to win. Learn about "gut" intuition...the little known second or "belly brain". Learn about dousing for winners, and questing, muscle-testing and blessing to name only a few of the intuition-innovative techniques .
