The gamma-ray spectra of fission products resulting from nuclear weapon detonations provide basic data required in fallout exposure and shielding calculations. One method for obtaining the gamma-ray spectra is the application of the iterative unfolding technique to the measured pulse-height spectra. This technique, however, requires the construction of a response matrix which contains a series of response functions of the detector assembly to various gamma-ray energies. This report describes the essential steps in the construction of a response matrix, having the dimensions 100 energy bins and 1024 channels, used to obtain the complex gamma-ray spectra from the experimental pulse-height spectra. The photons of interest have an energy range extending from 0.060 to 5.00 Mev. The report also presents the associated computer programs for generating and using the response matrix. The results of unfolding of synthesized pulse-height spectra having a known number of gamma rays of known energy are presented. The computer programs are written in Fortran II language for use with an IBM-704 computer. (Author).

A technique has been developed at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory to sum high resolution gamma-ray pulse spectra from systems with multiple Ge detectors. Lockheed Martin Idaho Technologies Company operates a multi-detector spectrometer configuration at the Stored Waste Examination Pilot Plant facility which is used to characterize the radio nuclide contents in waste drums destined for shipment to Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. This summing technique was developed to increase the sensitivity of the system, reduce the count times required to properly quantify the radionuclides and provide a more consistent methodology for combining data collected from multiple detectors. In spectrometer systems with multiple detectors looking at non homogenous waste forms it is often difficult to combine individual spectrum analysis results from each detector to obtain a meaningful result for the total waste container. This is particularly true when the counting statistics in each individual spectrum are poor. The spectrum summing technique adds the spectra collected by each detector into a single spectrum which has better counting statistics than each individual spectrum. A normal spectral analysis program can then be used to analyze the sum spectrum to obtain radio nuclide values which have smaller errors and do not have to be further manipulated to obtain results for the total waste container.

The acquisition of pulse height spectra data in the industrial environment has traditionally evolved along two paths. The first required the transporting of a radioactive sample from the place of production to a computer system for counting and analysis. This method results in a degradation of the data due to the time delay between sample production and subsequent counting. The second path was taken to count the sample at the place of production and transport the data in the form of paper or magnetic tape to a computer for analysis. Automation of the traditional methods is usually impractical. This paper describes two methods of remote data acquistion developed at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory which were formulated to mechanize the complete process from data gathering to analysis. Both methods utilize voice grade telephone links between the data gathering device and a PDP-9 computer. The two methods differ in the type of device used to acquire the data. The first is a completely hardwired system. The second is a computer based system utilizing a PDP-8/E. Differences between the two systems are described and evaluations made as to cost versus versatility. (auth).

Applied Gamma-Ray Spectrometry covers real life application of the gamma-ray and the devices used in their experimental studies. This book is organized into 9 chapters, and starts with discussions of the various decay processes, the possible interaction mechanisms of gamma radiation with matter, and the intrinsic and extrinsic variables, which affect the observed gamma-ray and X-ray spectra. The subsequent chapters deal with the properties and fabrication of scintillation detectors, semiconductor detectors, and proportional gas counters. These chapters present some of the most widely utilized applications of these detectors, with a particular emphasis to the activation analysis. These topics are followed by reviews of the description of basic equipment, such as amplifiers, analyzers, special spectrometer arrangements, and detector shielding. Other chapters describe energy and time resolution and quantitative calibration. The quantitative and qualitative interpretation of the spectra is also explained, along with the calibration of the detectors. The last chapter considers the analytical applications of gamma-ray and X-ray spectrometry in tracer studies, activation analysis, fission product studies, and X-ray fluorescence analysis. This book will be of value to analytical chemists and analytical chemistry researchers.
