This book is a unique contribution in two ways. Firstly, it puts the focus on the least understood element of the Indian anti-colonial liberation struggle, yet the one emphasized by Gandhi himself: the constructive program, or the building up of self-governed institutions and skills, enabling real autonomy from colonial rule and local empowerment of ordinary Indians. Secondly, it goes into the empirical detail of key campaigns of the liberation struggle, showing how the constructive work in a dynamic way connected with the resistance against British colonial rule. Bob Overy gives us inspiring, incisive and well-articulated pathways for transforming Gandhi's legacy into contemporary action, notably the interdependence between programmes of constructive work and satyagraha. Across the world, I am sure, practitioners and activists, especially for social and climate justice, will benefit."

Noncooperation In India written by David Hardiman and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-03-01 with History categories.

The Noncooperation Movement of 1920-22, led by Mahatma Gandhi, challenged every aspect of British rule in India. It was supported by people from all levels of the social hierarchy and united Hindus and Muslims in a way never again achieved by Indian nationalists. It was remarkably nonviolent. In all, it was one of the major mass protests of modern times. Yet there are almost no accounts of the entire movement, although many aspects of it have been covered by local-level studies. This volume both brings together and builds on these studies, looking at fractious all-India debates over strategy; the major grievances that drove local-level campaigns; the ways leaders braided together these streams of protest within a nationalist agenda; and the distinctive features of popular nonviolence for a righteous cause. David Hardiman's previous volume, The Nonviolent Struggle for Indian Freedom, examined the history of nonviolent resistance in the Indian nationalist movement. The present volume takes his study forward to examine the culmination of this first surge of struggle. While the campaign of 1920-22 did not achieve its desired objective of immediate self-rule, it did succeed in shaking to the core the authority of the British in India.

Constructive Resistance written by Majken Jul Sørensen and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-09-12 with Political Science categories.

Constructive resistance occurs when people start to build the society they desire independently of and in opposition to the dominant structures already in place. Through case studies and illustrative examples from around the world, this book explores how people working for a more just, sustainable and peaceful future combine construction and resistance. The book provides students and practitioners of resistance with tools to detect, critically discuss and evaluate cases of constructive resistance. While some movements focus mainly on either construction or resistance, the authors argue that those who manage to creatively combine the two are likely to achieve more far-reaching goals and see their results become more durable.

Indian Politics And Society Since Independence written by Bidyut Chakrabarty and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-05-12 with Political Science categories.

Focusing on politics and society in India, this book explores new areas enmeshed in the complex social, economic and political processes in the country. Linking the structural characteristics with the broader sociological context, the book emphasizes the strong influence of sociological issues on politics, such as social milieu shaping and the articulation of the political in day-to-day events. Political events are connected with the ever-changing social, economic and political processes in order to provide an analytical framework to explain ‘peculiarities’ of Indian politics. Bidyut Chakrabarty argues that three major ideological influences of colonialism, nationalism and democracy have provided the foundational values of Indian politics. Structured thematically and chronologically, this work is a useful resource for students of political science, sociology and South Asian studies.

That the world needs to take a substantially new direction, and quickly, is no longer controversial for any thoughtful person. A whole new way of seeing the world and our role in its destiny is called for. It's what Michael Nagler and others call the New Story. It rejects the mechanical, capitalist narrative that pits humans against each other and instead turns to a connected and collaborative vision of the future. The final missing piece of the New Story is what Nagler has termed the Third Harmony in human nature: nonviolence. Nonviolence is the only method compatible with the New Story's content and the only power strong enough to move the heart toward this deep and revolutionary change. This book focuses on how a shift to a nonviolence mind-set can be integrated into the very foundations of our understanding of humanity and community, not just on how nonviolence works as a protest tactic.
