Armchair Fiction presents extra large editions of classic mystery-crime double novels. The first novel is the cult favorite, "Gang Moll" by Albert L. Quandt. The slums are full of girls like Lee Sissle--fiery, troublesome girls who want more out of life--but who go about it the wrong way. When the girls at the stocking factory showed Lee how to pick up extra money by stealing nylons, she learned fast--but then got caught and fired. Her landlady promptly threw her out, but Lee was not deserted by the landlady's son, Goosey, who drove trucks for a racketeer. Goosey took Lee to the Vagabond Club where she lived as a member of the gang. This started her life of crime. It took Lee only a short time to discover that a cellar club wasn't for her. Playing men for all they were worth, stirring up desire and trouble wherever she went, Lee continued as a gang moll until an avenging racketeer caught up with her. This double novel's second tale is "Tip Your Hat to Death" by H.B. Hickey. Tom Ritchie was a hard-working investigator for the DA's office, slaving away on a menagerie of routine cases. Then one day the murder case of a lifetime dropped into his lap. It was the gruesome killing of Victor Unger, a seasoned psychiatrist known to have many friends and few enemies. Unger's headless body had been found in an alleyway by two screaming girls. In the spotlight of suspicion were four of the doc's ex-patients, one of whom was married to a wealthy financier who had a bad habit of standing in the way of the cops. But could anyone, including the DA, sew together the scattered clues in such a twisted murder case? Only time would tell, and Tom Ritchie soon found himself under the gun to figure out the who, the when, and the why of it all before someone got away with murder.

The "Fresh Air" book critic investigates the enduring power of The Great Gatsby -- "The Great American Novel we all think we've read, but really haven't." Conceived nearly a century ago by a man who died believing himself a failure, it's now a revered classic and a rite of passage in the reading lives of millions. But how well do we really know The Great Gatsby? As Maureen Corrigan, Gatsby lover extraordinaire, points out, while Fitzgerald's masterpiece may be one of the most popular novels in America, many of us first read it when we were too young to fully comprehend its power. Offering a fresh perspective on what makes Gatsby great -- and utterly unusual -- So We Read On takes us into archives, high school classrooms, and even out onto the Long Island Sound to explore the novel's hidden depths, a journey whose revelations include Gatsby 's surprising debt to hard-boiled crime fiction, its rocky path to recognition as a "classic," and its profound commentaries on the national themes of race, class, and gender. With rigor, wit, and infectious enthusiasm, Corrigan inspires us to re-experience the greatness of Gatsby and cuts to the heart of why we are, as a culture, "borne back ceaselessly" into its thrall. Along the way, she spins a new and fascinating story of her own.

'This book is an extremely important part of women's social history. Read it!' - Maxine Peake Robin Hood, Dick Turpin, Ronnie Biggs, the Krays ... All have become folk heroes, glamorised and romanticised, even when they killed. But where are their female equivalents? Where are the street robbers, gang leaders, diamond thieves, gold smugglers and bank robbers? Queens of the Underworld reveals the incredible story of female crooks from the seventeenth century to the present. From Moll Cutpurse to the Black Boy Alley Ladies, from jewel thief Emily Lawrence to bandit leader Elsie Carey and burglar Zoe Progl, these were charismatic women at the top of their game. But female criminals have long been dismissed as either not 'real women' or not 'real criminals', and in the process their stories have been lost. Caitlin Davies unravels the myths, confronts the lies and tracks down modern-day descendants in order to tell the truth about their lives for the first time.
