The First International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Modelling and Using Context, Rio de Janeiro, January 1997, gave rise to the present book, which contains a selection of the papers presented there, thoroughly refereed and revised. The treatment of contexts as bona fide objects of logical formalisation has gained wide acceptance, following the seminal impetus given by McCarthy in his Turing Award address. The field of natural language offers a particularly rich variety of examples and challenges to researchers concerned with the formal modelling of context, and several chapters in the volume deal with contextualisation in the setting of natural language. Others adopt a purely formal-logical viewpoint, seeking to develop general models of even wider applicability. The innovative element of this volume is its overview of the fundamental psycholinguistic topics involved in sentence processing. While most psycholinguistic studies focus on a single language and induce a general model of universal sentence processing, this volume proposes a cross-linguistic approach. It contains two distinct features first embraced in the 18th century by brothers Freiherr Wilhelm von Humboldt and Alexander von Humboldt. First, it offers a linguistic theory that characterizes universal cognitive features of the human language processor (or the mind and its biological source), independent of a single language structure. Second, it contains a language theory which considers the diversity of linguistic structures and provides a powerful theory of language processing. Contributors cover a wide range of topics, including word recognition, fixed expressions, grammatical constraints, empty categories, and parsing. Their research involves analyses of 12 languages. Gaps occur in natural language when sentence constituents are omitted as a result of movement rules, subjectless clause constructions, and compound phrases. In order to properly represent the information contained in a sentence, such gaps must be filled before the final, logical representation of the sentence is created. This paper examines the use of purely syntactic methods for eliminating gaps which exist after parsing. Syntactic graphs, rather than parse trees, are used to represent the surface structure of the sentences. It is shown that certain gaps can be filled using only syntactic information. Rules are presented for handling these gaps. There are other gaps, however, which cannot be filled syntactically. Hopefully, knowledge about the world or the context of the sentence can be utilized to fill these gaps.
