Through state-backed Catholicism, monolingualism, militarism, and dictatorship, Spain’s fascists earned their reputation for intolerance. It may therefore come as a surprise that 80,000 Moroccans fought at General Franco’s side in the 1930s. What brought these strange bedfellows together, Eric Calderwood argues, was a highly effective propaganda weapon: the legacy of medieval Muslim Iberia, known as al-Andalus. This legacy served to justify Spain’s colonization of Morocco and also to define the Moroccan national culture that supplanted colonial rule. Writers of many political stripes have celebrated convivencia, the fabled “coexistence” of Christians, Muslims, and Jews in medieval Iberia. According to this widely-held view, modern Spain and Morocco are joined through their shared Andalusi past. Colonial al-Andalus traces this supposedly timeless narrative to the mid-1800s, when Spanish politicians and intellectuals first used it to press for Morocco’s colonization. Franco later harnessed convivencia to the benefit of Spain’s colonial program in Morocco. This shift precipitated an eloquent historical irony. As Moroccans embraced the Spanish insistence on Morocco’s Andalusi heritage, a Spanish idea about Morocco gradually became a Moroccan idea about Morocco. Drawing on a rich archive of Spanish, Arabic, French, and Catalan sources—including literature, historiography, journalism, political speeches, schoolbooks, tourist brochures, and visual arts—Calderwood reconstructs the varied political career of convivencia and al-Andalus, showing how shared pasts become raw material for divergent contemporary ideologies, including Spanish fascism and Moroccan nationalism. Colonial al-Andalus exposes the limits of simplistic oppositions between European and Arab, Christian and Muslim, that shape current debates about European colonialism.

The first study to undertake a wide-ranging comparison of invocations of al-Andalus across the Arab and Hispanic worlds. Around the globe, concerns about interfaith relations have led to efforts to find earlier models in Muslim Iberia (al-Andalus). This book examines how Muslim Iberia operates as an icon or symbol of identity in twentieth and twenty-first century narrative, drama, television, and film from the Arab world, Spain, and Argentina. Christina Civantos demonstrates how cultural agents in the present ascribe importance to the past and how dominant accounts of this importance are contested. Civantoss analysis reveals that, alongside established narratives that use al-Andalus to create exclusionary, imperial identities, there are alternate discourses about the legacy of al-Andalus that rewrite the traditional narratives. In the process, these discourses critique their imperial and gendered dimensions and pursue intercultural translation.

Contemporary Spain reflects broader patterns of globalization and has been the site of tensions between nationalists and immigrants. This case study examines a rural town in Spain’s Andalucía in order to shed light on the workings of coexistence. The town of Órgiva’s diverse population includes hippies from across Europe, European converts to Sufi Islam, and immigrants from North Africa. Christina Civantos combines the analysis of written and visual cultural texts with oral narratives from residents. In this book, we see that although written and especially televisual narratives about the town highlight tolerance and multiculturalism, they mask tensions and power differentials. En cuanto a la represión, acotamos el periodo de los últimos años de la dictadura hasta los primeros de la democracia. Hay una constante: el uso que el poder hace de los medios de comunicación para controlar muy especialmente, mediante partes o notas oficiales, aquellas actuaciones policiales que habían tenido como resultado víctimas mortales. El primer y más contundente saldo de víctimas como resultado de una manifestación lo encontramos en los tres albañiles muertos en Granada (1970) y continúa con la muerte de un ciudadano en Carmona (1974), la herida mortal sufrida por un trabajador en la manifestación de Hytasa (Sevilla), el tiro que acabó con la vida de Verdejo Lucas en Almería, el disparo que mató a García Caparrós el Día de Andalucía en Málaga, los tres jóvenes del Caso Almería, aquel adolescente lebrijano que recibió una descarga frente al cuartel de Trebujena... También durante la dictadura, Andalucía sufre un deterioro de su imagen, fomentado para hacer de esta tierra una reserva de mano de obra barata, destinada a la emigración. Entra aquí la herencia maldita de Ortega y Gasset y su “teoría de la ociosidad”, aprovechada por Pujol y seguida de las más diversas formas, desde políticos y periodistas indignados por el “voto cautivo”, hasta una serie de nombres, entre otros los que cabe recordar a Vidal-Quadras, que llamó “cretino integral” a Blas Infante, pasando por Artur Mas, todo un presidente de la Generalitat, mofándose del habla de los niños andaluces; Durán Lleida, arremetiendo contra los jornaleros de esta tierra, al que siguió, Cayetano Martínez de Irujo... Todos ellos ofenden primero y luego piden disculpas. Andalucía sigue sufriendo ese constante pim pam pum... ¿Quién nos defiende de tantas agresiones? ¿Los políticos, los medios de comunicación...? El autor invita a una profunda reflexión como lo hizo en su día con Julián Marías, Alfonso Carlos Comín, José María Pemán, Gerald Brenan, Antonio Domínguez Ortiz, Antonio Mairena, Josep Tarradellas, Plácido Fernández Viagas... Y años más tarde, con Antonio Gala, Rafael Escuredo, Luisa Infante, José Manuel Caballero Bonald...
