Excerpt from Garden Walks With the Poets Whatever may seem capricious in the selection is therefore to be ascribed to redundance and excellence of material. I should have been glad to make my book hold twice as many poems, and have left out not a few favorites, sorely against my will. The plan required that variety of topics and treatment should be a leading object, and this excluded some of the most charming flower-poetry. Then, again, some pieces of that kind had, from their very excellence, already found their way into every school reading-book, and it seemed superfluous to reprint them here. And more than all, the quantity of verses which I had supposed could be contained in a good-sized volume, proved so much beyond the capacity of any volume of tolerable proportions, that a great mass of dearly beloved poems were absolutely crowded out pell-mell; thus disturbing considerably the regular ar rangement at first contemplated. I think, however, there will be found something for all tastes, as well as for all seasons and I sincerely desire that my readers may enjoy Garden Walks with the Poets as much as I have. Excerpt from The Old-Fashioned Garden: And Other Verses So bright and lovely is the dear old place, It seems as though the country's very heart Were centered here, and that its antique grace Must ever hold it from the world apart. Immured it lies among the meadows deep, Its flowery stillness beautiful and calm as softest sleep. Some like a garden where the hand of art Appears in every terrace, walk, and bed, Where vases stand in even rows apart And shrubs are taught symmetric shade to spread But little art I wish; enough for me This garden where the flowers grow in sweet simplicity. Fair is each budding thing the garden shows, From spring's frail crocus to the latest bloom Of fading autumn. Every wind that blows Across that glowing tract sips rare perfume From all the tangled blossoms tossing there Soft winds, they fain would linger long, nor farther fare! The morning-glories ripple o'er the hedge And fleck its greenness with their tinted foam Sweet Wilding things, up to the garden's edge They love to wander from their meadow home, To take what little pleasure here they may Ere all their silken trumpets close before the warm mid-day. Excerpt from The Garden Muse: Poems for Garden Lovers No attempt has been made to bring together in this book all the poems that have been written about gardens. The compiler has simply sought to please himself and those whose taste chimes with his own, by weaving a chaplet of choice garden flowers culled more or less at random from the richest and rarest parterres of poetry. The only fixed principle he has followed in the process of selection is that no poem should be admitted merely because it had the garden for its theme or inspiration. The primary pleasure afforded by poetry is, after all, whatever its subject, that which is proper to it as a form of artistic expression. Surely it would be a poor compliment to pay the gar den lover to suppose that he could relish bad verse the more because it was consecrated to a cult at whose shrine he worshiped. Hence, any poem that has seemed not to conform to the. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from My Garden, and Other Poems John Gregory was born on the 14th of June, 1831, at Bideford, in Devon. His father was a merchant's clerk, and a man of considerable natural ability and thought, and of a deeply religious turn of mind. For fifty years he was a local preacher in connection with the Wesleyan Methodists, and a tablet to his memory was erected in the chapel where he usually officiated. His mother was the daughter of a Hartland peasant. The boy had but little schooling. At the age of eleven he was apprenticed to a shoemaker for the term of seven years, and whilst serving his time became acquainted with Edward Capern, a postman, who subsequently made a considerable reputation as a poet. Young Gregory now began to pave his way, and, with a brave heart, set out in pursuit of knowledge. After his hours of weary work he devoted what leisure he had to study, but he regarded all books as footnotes to the book of Nature. His apprenticeship served, Gregory came to Bristol, but in a few months lack of work drove him home again, where he continued to reside until 1852. Excerpt from The Garden of Love: Flowers Gathered From the Poets The following poems are arranged in a certain sequence, so that as far as possible, they may assimilate themselves to the order of Nature in a garden throughout the year. They have been selected to this end, and are, through the exigencies of the subject, mainly examples of that "lyrical cry" by which personal human emotion is expressed in rhythm and rhyme. Though many of them are long familiar to the lover of English literature, and none appear for the first time, I believe this to be the most representative collection of love-poems that has hitherto been compiled. The reader can hardly fail to notice with surprise the extraordinary variety of style, thought, and treatment which is to be met with, in dealing with the single subject of Love in its different phases. And this, although several aspects of Love have purposely or of necessity been omitted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Garden That I Love Second Series The Longest day.-some too partial persons have been pleased to say that not only the writing of books concerning gardens, but the growing atfec tion for them, owes something to The Garden that I Love. I am so little of an author, though so much of a gardener in a small way, that I fear the expression of this belief gives one a certain amount of pleasure, since even the most unambitious persons have, in their hearts, the foible of self complacency as much as the most soaring. But this weakness receives its corrective from Lamia's irony and the Poet's chastening sense. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
