ATURAN baru kolonialisme yang ditekankan oleh Herman Willem Daendels kepada keraton Jawa tengah-selatan pada 1808–1810 menyulut kegelisahan di jantung ibu kota Kesultanan Yogyakarta. Di mancanegara timur kesultanan, Raden Ronggo Prawirodirjo III (1779–1810) menentang praktik kolonialisme dan imperialisme Belanda itu pada 20 November–17 Desember 1810. Raden Ronggo menjadi tokoh penting yang memainkan peran besar sebelum runtuhnya masa tatanan lama setelah Perang Jawa (1825–1830) dan secara tidak langsung mengantar kelahiran tatanan baru di Jawa. Memang, perlawanannya gagal dan dia dianggap sebagai pembelot, sehingga jasadnya dikebumikan di kompleks makam pemberontak di Banyusumurup, Yogyakarta. Pangeran Diponegoro menyebut “setelah lenyapnya Raden Ronggo, sebetulnya Kerajaan Yogyakarta sudah tak punya lagi seorang pelaga”. Pasca-kemerdekaan, Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX menyatakan Raden Ronggo sebagai “pejuang perintis melawan Belanda” dan memindahkan jasadnya ke Astana Giripurno di Magetan pada 1957. Buku ini berisi riwayat Raden Ronggo Prawirodirjo III, Bupati Madiun sekaligus Bupati Wedana Mancanegara Timur di bawah Kesultanan Yogyakarta (1796–1810), yang mengobarkan perlawanan terhadap pemerintahan kolonial Belanda. Dalam babad autobiografinya yang ditulis dalam pengasingan di Manado pada 1831–1832, Pangeran Diponegoro menganggap Raden Ronggo Prawirodirjo III sebagai suri teladan bagi perjuangannya selama Perang Jawa.

The subject of this book is ritual behaviour, in particular of groups with a distinctive religious, ethnic or other identity which use rituals to pursue strategic ends ad intra and ad extra. Five essays offer theoretical perspectives on ritual in plural and pluralist societies, on similarity and demarcation, on the negative case of the Australian Aboriginals, on Brazilian religious pluralism, and on Ghanaian churches in the Netherlands. Three essays describe the ritualization of the encounter, or confrontation, between religions in India (between Buddhists and Hindus, and between Hindus and Muslims), and in Yemen between Muslims and Jews. Four essays study the responses to internal religious plurality, in early Israel, on Java, in Indonesia, and in Spain and North Africa. One essay explores responses to external religious plurality. In the epilogue, the social nature of pluralism and identity is highlighted.

In the United States, precious little is known about the active role Muslim women have played for nearly a century in the religious culture of Indonesia, the largest majority-Muslim country in the world. While much of the Muslim world excludes women from the domain of religious authority, the country's two leading Muslim organizations--Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU)--have created enormous networks led by women who interpret sacred texts and exercise powerful religious influence. In Women Shaping Islam, Pieternella van Doorn-Harder explores the work of these contemporary women leaders, examining their attitudes toward the rise of radical Islamists; the actions of the authoritarian Soeharto regime; women's education and employment; birth control and family planning; and sexual morality. Pembahasan resepsi al-Qur’an masuk pada ranah kajian Sosial-Humaniora. Bentuk spiritualitas melalui mujahadah dan semaan al-Qur’an di lingkungan Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat sudah berlangsung semenjak Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X naik tahta (njumeneng) dan secara resmi dihelat di pagelaran Keraton saat puncak Hajad Dalem peringatan Hadeging Negari Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat ke-243 pada tanggal 17 Desember 1990 M. Kehadiran praktik semacam ini memberikan asumsi bahwa laku spiritual tapa brata, sesuai dengan akronim MANTAB (majelis nawaitu tapa brata), sebuah sikap dan praktik asketis tetaplah menjadi bagian sendi terpenting dalam ruang batin masyarakat Jawa. Fokus penelitian buku ini adalah terkait: Bagaimana praktik mujahadah dan semaan al-Qur’an mantab purbojati Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat? Serta mengapa Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat memilih mujahadah dan semaan al-Qur’an mantab purbojati dalam pembangunan spiritualnya? Pertanyaan tersebut menjadi sangat relevan karena akan membuka informasi adanya bentuk spiritualitas yang kehadirannya melengkapi (njangkepi) sekaligus menjadi bagian sistem siklus hidup (rites of passage) dan diterima secara utuh tanpa harus merubah sama sekali tradisi yang baku dan telah berlangsung serta berkembang di Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan metode analisis deskriptif serta teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan studi dokumentasi dan analisis lapangan melalui pendekatan etnografi yang bersifat historis analisis. Disamping pendekatan tersebut, penelitian ini juga menggunakan pendekatan antropologis sosial. Pendekatan ini menekankan cara bagaimana kepercayaan dan khususnya ritus mampu memperkuat ikatan-ikatan sosial tradisional diantara individu-individu. Pendekatan ini menekankan cara struktur sosial sebuah kelompok yang diperkuat dan dilestarikan melalui simbolisasi ritual berbalut mistis yang berangkat dari nilai-nilai sosial yang mendasari stuktur sosial tersebut. Penelitian ini mendukung teori Mitsuo Nakamura (1993) yang menuliskan bahwa budaya Indonesia, yakni Jawa, ternyata bisa melahirkan budaya Islam yang kuat. Kemudian teori Mark R. Woodward (1999) yang mengatakan bahwa Islam di Jawa adalah Islam sebagaimana Islam di belahan dunia manapun (varian Islam), dan teori M.C. Ricklefs (2011) yang berpendapat bahwa menjadi Muslim berarti menjadi Jawa, proses Islamisasi di Jawa telah menciptakan identitas baru yang sama sekali tidak bertentangan dengan kepercayaan maupun budaya lokal. Serta teori Bambang Pranowo (2009) yang menyatakan bahwa proses beragama (religiusitas) masyarakat Jawa berlangsung sangat dinamis. Religiusitas harus dipandang sebagai proses menjadi (state of becoming) bukan proses mengada (state of being).
