Lubrication: A Practical Guide to Lubricant Selection provides a guide to modern lubrication practice in industry, with emphasis on practical application, selection of lubricants, and significant factors that determine suitability of a lubricant for a specific application. Organized into 13 chapters, this book begins with a brief theoretical opening chapter on the basic principles of lubrication. A chapter then explains the choice of lubricant type, indicating how to decide whether to use oil, grease, dry lubricant, or gas lubrication. Subsequent chapters deal with detailed selection of lubricating oils, oil systems, oil changing, greases, dry lubricants, gas lubrication, sealing, testing, monitoring, and handling of lubricants. The final chapter describes the main hazards associated with lubricants and some of the techniques for controlling those hazards. This book will be of value to technical staffs who use lubricants in their work; to students of mechanical, production, or maintenance engineering; and to others, such as buyers and storekeepers concerned with lubricants.

Fluid film lubrication is an exceptional mechanical process in that viscous shear stress contributes directly to the useful function of developing a load capacity. Although viscosity also causes bearing friction, the equivalent lift-to-drag ratio of a typical hydrodynamic wedge is in the order of 1000 to 1, which compares favorably to a high performance wing. Lubricant compressibility is the distinctive feature of gas bearings in contrast to the more common liquid lubricated bearings. Although basic concepts such as the hydrodynamic wedge are still applicable to gas bearings despite of lubricant compressibility, many additional features in gas bearings are unique and require separate attention.

Externally pressurized gas-lubricated journal bearings 1.5 in. in diameter and 2 in. in length and thrust bearings 1.5 in. in diameter were tested with nitrogen as the lubricant gas at temperatures to 1200 F.A variable-inductance type proximity system was applied to the measurement of bearing operating clearances at temperatures up to 1200 F. Clearances were measured under static nonrotating conditions for a wide range of lubricant-supply pressures and bearing loads. Shaft motion was observed during high-speed rotating tests indicating dynamic instability. The effects of lubricant-supply pressure, loading, and temperature on the threshold of instability were recorded. Correlation with theoretical predictions of bearing load capacity, clearance, and whirl threshold was examined. (Author).

Journal bearings 1.5 in. in diameter and 2 in. long were tested with N as the lubricant gas over a range of test conditions from room temperature 1900 F, zero speed to 65,000 rpm, under radial loads to 10 lb. The effects of temperature and shaft speed on lubricant gas flow are presented, and correlation with theoretically predicted temperature variation is attempted. Thrust bearings of 1.5 in. diameter were tested with the lubricant gases N, He, Ar and Freon 14 (CF4) over a range of test conditions from room temperature to 1900 F, zero speed to 65,000 rpm, under axial loads to 100 lb. Axial instability was encountered, but was overcome by use of a grooved-recess type of thrust bearing. The effects of load, temperature, supply pressure, and lubricant gas differences on the lubricant-gas flow are presented, and correlation with theoretical predictions is attempted. An all-ceramic rig was used for thrust-bearing tests at 1900 F, and a five-circuit gas supply preheating furnace was put into service. (Author).
