Gastrointestinal function represents an important, and hitherto inappropriately neglected, aspect of diabetes management. Disordered gastrointestinal motor and sensory function occurs frequently in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes and may be associated with gastrointestinal symptoms that adversely affect quality of life. During the last two decades there has been a rapid expansion in knowledge in this area. It is now recognised that upper gastrointestinal motility is pivotal to the regulation of postprandial blood glucose concentrations in both health and patients with diabetes. This book is the first of its kind and was stimulated by the need to consolidate these recent advances, which dictate that a knowledge of gastroenterology as it relates to diabetes is now required of the clinician/diabetologist. * Features an organ-specific overview of the epidemiology and pathophysiology of disordered gastrointestinal (including hepatobiliary and pancreatic) function in diabetes mellitus * Contains guidelines for the clinician, diabetologist and gastroenterologist for both diagnosis and management * Includes a comprehensive description of the relation between gastrointestinal function, gastrointestinal hormones, autonomic nerve function and glycaemic control in animal models * Covers the development of new treatment options, particularly those targeted at the reduction of postprandial hyperglycaemia, to optimise glycaemic control This book will be of interest to gastroenterologists, diabetologists, specialist nurses and clinical researchers.

Abstract number: AD-1506 Diabetic Gastropathy in Bangladeshi Adult Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Their Association with Co-morbidities.AuthorsSelim S Corresponding Author:Dr Shahjada SelimAssistant ProfessorDepartment of EndocrinologyBangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, DhakaEmail: [email protected] occurrence of DM complications in the digestive system is relatively well-known. These complications appear as gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, heartburn, dysphagia, constipation, diarrhea, and fecal incontinence). These symptoms are caused by gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders, changes in visceral sensitivity, alteration in the secretion of neurotransmitters, psychological and digestive comorbidities (such as celiac disease), mucosal inflammation, gallstone disease, and hepatic steatosis.9-11 The term diabetic gastroenteropathy refers to all gastrointestinal complications observed in patients with DM.9-11 As a consequence of the complications in the digestive canal, which damage in the enteric nervous system, patients with DM may have specific gastrointestinal motility disorders, some of which may be of great clinical relevance, such as diabetic gastroparesis, constipation, and diarrhea.10,12 Thus, diabetic enteropathy reflects widespread autonomic involvement.11,13,14Currently, it is known that the entire gastrointestinal tract is affected by DM, from the mouth to the anorectal region, and dysfunction of this system contributes to the morbidity of this disease and worsens the quality of life of diabetic individuals. Thus, there is need of achieving better understanding of the gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with DM and joining efforts of pediatricians and pediatric endocrinologists and gastroenterologists for the proper management of patients. So, thestudy was designed to explore types of GI disorders and their covariates in a group of type 2 DM subjects with more than 10 years of diabetes.Design and Methods:A cross-sectional analytic study was conducted among on adult type 2 DM subjects with duration of diabetes at least 10 years. The type 2 DM patients attending out- patients departments diabetes care centers of Bangladesh Diabetic Somity, were interviewed by trained research physicians. They collected sociodemographic data by face to face interview, diabetes related data from the u2018Guide booku2019. Rome IV diagnostic questionnaire for the adult was utilized for detection of diabetic Gastropathy. After obtaining informed consent form signed, 3893 respondents were included in the study. Maintaining all the safety precaution, blood sample was collected glycemic status, liver function, kidney function and basic defects of diabetes through homeostasis model assessment. Result:In total 3893 adult patients with type 2 diabetes were included in the study. Out of them, 3431 (88.13%) subjects had one or more of GI disorders. About 42.97% (1673) subjects had single followed by double disorders (26.33%). Among the disorders unspecified functional bowel disorder (UFBD) was the most frequent (72.10%) one.
