"Jesus is masterful at seeing the exquisite in odd places. ... He came for both the sophisticated and the rubes. Jesus finds beauty in those who have been mistaken for weeds. He loves the unlovely and sees each one of us in amazing, unimaginably beautiful ways."In her trademark communication style of transparency, humor, and poignant observations, author and speaker Melissa Maimone explores the delights and difficulties of faith-filled living. She shines a vulnerable light on both deep suffering and tremendous joy through short stories, Scripture, prayers, and reflective meditations that read like entries from a journal. More than a devotional, every chapter is a declaration of hope, that in the midst of this ordinary, fractured life, you are deeply cared for, intricately known, and immensely loved by God.

Cultivated from sea level to mountaintop, from parched deserts to sodden rain forests, from the rocky Gaspé Peninsula to the plains of Argentina, corn is the grain of the Americas. In terms of culinary uses, it is amazingly diverse, reflecting the breathtaking variety of the continents and environments from which it evolved. The consummate immigrant, corn is grown extensively on every continent except Antarctica. Market farmer and naturalist Anthony Boutard weaves together this unique plant's contribution to our culture, its distinctive biology, and the practical information needed to grow and enjoy it at home. Beautiful Corn advocates a return to the nourishing whole grain that built America, in place of today's genetically modified crops processed by industrial agriculture into synthetic sweeteners and cheap meat. Come along on this lyrical and inspiring journey through the seasons, learning about growing and using corn in the traditional way. Gardeners and market farmers can lead the way to a healthier country by restoring heritage corn varieties to our tables. An unabashed celebration of a much-maligned culinary treasure, Beautiful Corn will forever change the way you view this remarkable plant. Anthony Boutard is a widely recognized advocate in the local food movement, well-known for his efforts in reviving long-lost crops and bringing little-known varieties to market. He and his wife Carol own Ayers Creek Farm, a 144-acre organic market farm in Gaston, Oregon, specializing in berries, beans, grains, and greens for sale to local restaurants and markets.

Germinal is the thirteenth novel in Emile Zola's Les Rougon-Macquart series and is considered a masterpiece in literature. Set in France in the 1860's, Germinal is the story of a coalminer's strike, and particularly of it's central character, Etienne Lantier, a young migrant worker who gets a job pushing carts down the pit. A socialist at heart, Etienne reads a lot of literature about the working class and hangs around with a Russian anarchist called Souvarine. Told against a backdrop of extreme poverty, the lives and working conditions of the miners begins to worsen until they reach a breaking point and call a strike. By this time Etienne is a respected member of the community and is chosen to be the leader of the striker's movement. Encouraged into violence by Souvarine, the miners resist until their poverty leads them to vicious rioting, eventually leading to confrontations with the police and the army. Zola researched the novel in part by actually going down a working coal pit. Germinal has been published and translated in over a hundred countries, and inspired film and television adaptations.
