How to grow in love for your church. God calls us to be "devoted to one another in love" (Romans 12:10). What does this look like for us today? How can we be the kind of church member who makes a real difference? This engaging book by Tony Merida explores what church is, why being part of it is exciting, and why it’s worthy of our love and commitment. He sets out eight privileges and responsibilities of a church member: to belong, to welcome, to gather, to care, to serve, to honour, to witness and to send. As we see how wonderful it is to belong to God’s family and be a part of his amazing witness to both the earthly and the heavenly realms, we’ll grow in our love for and commitment to our local church. This is a great book for every churchgoer to read, whether they’re new or have been attending for some time but need re-energising with God’s vision for the local church. With a discussion guide at the end of the book, Love Your Church is also a great resource for small groups.

It's time to stop asking the old questions about how to do church better and instead ask how churches can more effectively participate in and grow God's kingdom. AND helps Christian leaders recognize the best in different church models and see how to incorporate these values into a cohesive church movement. By the numbers, the American church enjoys the resources to profoundly impact the Kingdom. But despite the rapid growth of these evangelical movements, the church in the West is in decline. A growing schism has emerged between the movement with a strong emphasis on attracting people and the more missional communities that focus on releasing people into ministry. Church resource specialists Hugh Halter and Matt Smay have been observing these different church models, and they challenge the idea that churches have to choose between them—between the attractional and missional approaches to ministry. With professional insight and practical advice, Halter and Smay dial in on how to bring together the very best of the attractional AND missional models for church ministry by exploring: The balance between gathering a community together AND scattering them into the world. The harmony between centralization AND decentralization in church structure. The mindset necessary to invest in both the traditional AND the innovative. The drive to maintain both a vision for the future AND a depth of community for the present. As churches begin to develop these ANDs, they will be better positioned to influence the world according to the design of God instead of the whims of the people or the pride associated with production.

Recent research has made a strong case for the view that Early Christian communities, sociologically considered, functioned as voluntary religious associations. This is similar to the practice of many other cultic associations in the Greco-Roman world of the first century CE. Building upon this new approach, along with a critical interpretation of all available sources, this book discusses the social and religio-historical background of the weekly gatherings of Christians and presents a fresh reconstruction of how the weekly gatherings originated and developed in both form and content. The topics studied here include the origins of the observance of Sunday as the weekly Christian feast-day, the shape and meaning of the weekly gatherings of the Christian communities, and the rise of customs such as preaching, praying, singing, and the reading of texts in these meetings.

Gathering the Church: God, Place, Creation is a critical and constructive proposal about the place and placedness of theology, intended to guide the church back to its essential location in the world, in the simultaneity and multiplicity opened between "in Christ" and "in Corinth." Critically, the argument is located within theology's threefold place-problem: (i) modern placelessness (cultural context), (ii) the "destruction" or "deworlding" of the world (philosophical context), and (iii) what Colin Gunton has called Christianity's failed doctrine of creation (theological context). These are not three different problems, but rather three aspects of the same problem. They share a suspicion about the inherent goodness of the earth and our place in it. Our cultural context denies that humans have any essential relation to places, our long philosophical context is founded on and continues to promote an appearance/reality dichotomy, and theology is also frequently predicated on a dualistic foundation (e.g., time/eternity, matter/spirit, nature/grace, visible/invisible) that undermines the concreteness of creation. In all three cases, the particularity of the world, divine economy, and church are concealed and obscured, and thus also our own essential placedness. If church and divine economy are the place where we're able to see the problem, they are also the place where we find the constructive way forward. For, neither church nor divine economy are intelligible apart from the place or region in which they appear. Both church and economy appear as things (and persons) appear in them and in their mutual belonging together. By attending to the nature and intelligibility of worldhood (creation), God's action in the world (divine economy), and our concrete, located response (church), we find the essential location of both theology and the church. Yet, providing theological direction beyond this problem does not yet get us to a way forward. For, the threefold place-problem appears within two prevailing and problematic ontologies, neither of which have room for discrete, particular regions of understanding. One derives meaning and understanding from timeless, eternal ideas (logical derivation); one derives meaning and intelligibility from human constructions and projections (subjective derivation). Against these two prevailing alternatives, I appropriate philosophical topology, whereby place replaces both eternal ideas and the human subject as the ground, unity, and meaning of reality. Through several biblical and theological discussion points, Gathering the Church establishes the inadequacy of these prevailing approaches to theology, both theoretically and practically, and it argues that topological theology's juxtaposition of the divine economy with spatial and topological concepts provides the church with a more adequate account of the church0́9s concrete location in the world and in response to God.

What is the church? What is the basis for meeting together as the church? What is true fellowship? What is the priesthood of all believers? What is the difference between unity and uniformity in the church? In this book, the first volume of Gathering Together, Lance Lambert answers these questions and many more. In doing this, he emphasizes the absolute headship of Christ and the oneness of the body of Christ.

What a shame, General Moshe whispered to his Corporal of the Guard. What a shame. It seems like just last week, this house of glory was full of music and praise. People were on their knees before God, praying for this community. They were fighting a battle and winning, Corporal Joabi reminisced. Yes, they were winning, but they just didnt realize it. The battle was fierce and the enemy had brought in Doubt and Apathy, two of their strongest warriors to infiltrate here. It wasnt long before the pastor was silenced because Doubt had begun to make headway within some of the congregation. When they were not seeing great strides forward, they began to doubt whether the work was worth continuing. The people quit praying and decided that they were not qualified to tell others about our Lord Jesus. They left all witnessing to the pastor and things went south from there. Some of the other congregations decided that if they made programs for everything, that all would be fine. They started a Monday night dinner program, a youth group that was very liberal in their teaching, and Bible studies that manifested themselves as social events more than a time to study the Word of God. They were more impressed with the social and financial status of the church than they were by the basic foundation of salvation. Numbers on the membership roll were more important than the number of people delivered from their sin. Profitability of the members was more vital than the righteousness and holiness of the Saints. It wasnt long before the Christians that attended there began to involve sin into their business practices because it was very lucrative, and as long as it was financially enhancing, it was no longer sin. Apathy had effectively made his move in the community. Boredom and indifference began to sweep through the churches and town like a wildfire, despite the pastors attempts to keep the church alive with Gods Holy Spirit. The community as a whole had embraced Doubt and Apathy as trusted leaders within the other churches, and the rest is history. Now we have an empty church as a painful monument of defeat.

The church lies at the centre of God's purpose. Christ gave himself 'to purify for himself a people that are his own'. But when we think about church, there's the tension between the ideal and the reality. The former is beautiful: God's special treasure, the covenant community, a haven of love and peace. The latter? A motley rabble needing constant rebuke and exhortation. Here we focus on the ideal, on what God intends his church to be, while all the time keeping in view the reality, so that we can grasp the changes that need to be made.

There is a powerful sound ringing out around the Earth today, a call to gather together believers from all across the world that will make up a strategic end-time remnant--the remnant of the priests. Within the pages of this book is a message that has the potential to radically change destiny. (Christian)
