Cinema has long played a major role in the formation of community among marginalized groups, and this book details that process for gay men in Sydney, Australia from the 1950s to the present. Scott McKinnon builds the book from a variety of sources, including film reviews, media reports, personal memoirs, oral histories, and a striking range of films, all deployed to answer the question of understanding cinema-going as a moment of connection to community and identity--how the experience of seeing these films and being part of an audience helped to build a community among the gay men of Sydney in the period.

Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,7, University of Marburg, language: English, abstract: According to Epstein and Friedman, the engagement of America’s film industry with ho- mosexuality in general has always been a sensitive issue and still is up to today. Although quite a few people working in Hollywood, “in all aspects of moviemaking, from producing to performing”, are openly homosexual, the industry’s main players are still reluctant to intensively approach this “prime phobia in Hollywood” (Hilliard 9). From the first signs of homosexuality in Dickson’s “Dickson Experimental Sound film” (1895) over to the restrictive Hays Code in the 30s on to influential modern movies such as Demme’s Philadelphia (1993) or Lee’s Brokeback Mountain (2005), there are plenty of examples of Hollywood’s varying engagement with homosexual issues. In the course of this paper, I will not only analyze the depiction of homosexuality in these movies, but also describe society’s reactions to these works. Of course, there have been harsh reactions to movies presenting homosexuality not as something to be feared of. Especially Christian groups have always blamed respective movies for depicting “deviant” behavior, as well as conservative politicians and media.

Explore queer themes in films from Hong Kong gangster flicks to Bollywood melodramas! Although Asian films have reached a new height in popularity worldwide, Queer Asian Cinema: Shadows in the Shade is the first full-length book in English solely devoted to examining the aesthetics and politics of homosexuality in Asian films. This unique book presents multiple points of view on the portrayal of gay, lesbian, and transgendered people in film throughout Asia. From the subversive sadomasochism of Japan's ”pink films” to the hard-boiled world of Hong Kong's gangster movies, Queer Asian Cinema analyzes and discusses attitudes toward homosexuality in the full spectrum of Asian film. In addition to studies of the representation of identified gay men, lesbians, and transgendered individuals, it reveals the hidden homoerotic subtext of otherwise conventional films. Queer Asian Cinema: Shadows in the Shade examines diverse aspects of Asian films, including: the political and psychological links between feudal and sadomasochist hierarchies the inevitable punishment of homoerotic bonds in gangster films the integration of the homosexual couple into the Confucian family structure in Korean films the complexities of cross-gender casting the differences between transvestism and cross-dressing the definition of male genitalia as obscene Queer Asian Cinema: Shadows in the Shade brings together experts in both film-making and movie criticism, providing a balanced viewpoint to unite the worlds of academic and popular perceptions on this subject. It opens an exciting discussion of this important and largely neglected area of cinematic discourse.

Coming Together written by Ryan Powell and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-15 with Social Science categories.

In Coming Together, Ryan Powell captures the social and political vitality of the first wave of movies made by, for, and about male-desiring men in the United States between World War II and the 1980s. From the underground films of Kenneth Anger and the Gay Girls Riding Club to the gay liberation-era hardcore films and domestic dramas of Joe Gage and James Bidgood, Powell illuminates how central filmmaking and exhibition were to gay socializing and worldmaking. Unearthing scores of films and a trove of film-related ephemera, Coming Together persuasively unsettles popular histories that center Stonewall as a ground zero for gay liberation and visibility. Powell asks how this generation of movie-making—which defiantly challenged legal and cultural norms around sexuality and gender—provided, and may still provide, meaningful models for living.
