The hypothesis that the Gospel of Mark was heavily influenced by Pauline theology and/or epistles was widespread in the nineteenth century, but fell out of favour for much of the twentieth century. In the last twenty years or so, however, this view has begun to attract renewed support, especially in English language scholarship. The present volume contains the proceedings of the fourth symposium of the Novum Testamentum Patristicum project (NTP), an international re-search project on the reception history of the New Testament in the early Church. The symposium was held in October 2012 at the University of Leuven. It was organised by Joseph Verheyden, Tobias Nicklas, and An-dreas Merkt, the coordinators of NTP. The topic of the meeting was the reception of the resurrection and empty tomb stories and the development of the belief in resurrection in the early Church.The belief in the resurrection constitutes the core issue of Christianity and of Christian tradition. The earliest references to the resurrection and witnesses to such a belief are found in the canonical gospels and in the letters of Paul, but the topic obviously remained of the utmost importance all through the early Church. Contributions to this volume offer studies on reception of the resurrection and empty tomb stories and the development of the belief in resurrection in the early Church by examining the most important early references on this topic.

The purpose of this book is to explore what a liturgical approach to the Bible looks like and what hermeneutical implications this might have: How does the liturgy celebrate, understand, and communicate Scripture? The starting point is Pope Benedict's affirmation that "a faith-filled understanding of sacred Scripture must always refer back to the liturgy" (Verbum Domini 52). The first part of the book (based on SC 24) provides significant examples to demonstrate: The liturgical order of readings intertextually combines Old Testament and New Testament readings using manifold hermeneutical principles, specifically how the psalms show the wide range of interpretations the liturgy employs. Prayers are biblically inspired and help to appropriate Scripture personally. The hymns convey Scripture in a poetic way. Signs and actions such as foot-washing or the Ephphetha rite enact Scripture. The study considers the Mass, the sacraments and the Liturgy of the Hours. In the second part, Benini systematically focuses on the various dimensions of liturgical hermeneutics of the Bible, which emerge from the first part. The study reflects the approaches the liturgy offers to Scripture and its liturgical reception. It explores theological aspects such as the unity of the two Testaments in Christ's paschal mystery or the anamnesis as a central category in both Scripture and liturgy. The liturgy does not understand Scripture primarily as a document of the past, but celebrates it as a current and living "Word of the Lord," as a medium of encounter with God: Scripture is sacramental. Liturgical Hermeneutics of Sacred Scripture seeks to contribute not only to the comparison of the Roman, Ambrosian, and Byzantine Rite regarding the Word of God, but most of all to the overall "liturgical approach" to Scripture. As such, it promotes an interdisciplinary dialogue of liturgical and biblical studies.

Die Liturgiekonstitution des Zweiten Vatikanums wollte als Teil der Liturgiereform die Feier des Wortes Gottes stärken und mit der "sacra Verbi Dei celebratio" eine zusätzliche Feierform gefördert wissen, die an alte Traditionen einer eigenständigen Wort-Gottes-Feier anknüpft. Sie kann von Priester, Diakon oder sonstigen Beauftragten geleitet werden. Das Konzil intendierte eine generelle Etablierung der Wort-Gottes-Feier im Gemeindeleben. Unter dieser Voraussetzung würde sie sich gerade dort bewähren, wo sonntags keine Eucharistiefeier möglich ist. Ein "Ersatz" der Eucharistiefeier war aber, wie Meurer zeigt, gerade nicht im Blick der Konzilsväter. Diese Ersatzfunktion wurde nach dem Konzil praktisch zum Regelfall. Die primäre Intention des Konzilsbeschlusses wird hingegen bis heute weitgehend nicht entsprechend umgesetzt. Damit fällt auch ein neues Licht auf zentrale Fragen um die tägliche oder sonntägliche Liturgie der Kirche. Welche Feierformen als Liturgie angesprochen werden können, was zur sakramentlichen Liturgie der Kirche gehört, welche Bedeutung dem gemeinsamen Priestertum zukommt, was als Proprium der Wort-Gottes-Feier anzusehen ist, welche Kriterien für oder gegen eine Verbindung mit der Kommunionfeier sprechen und vieles mehr: Diese Diskussionen sind künftig vorsichtiger und mit der hier ausgeführten klaren Begrifflichkeit zu führen.
