Schon lange gehört Vegetation in unterschiedlichen Formen zur Stadtentwicklung und zum Stadtleben und ist auch heute in verschiedenem Ausmaß in den meisten urbanen Gebieten zu finden. So entstanden in den letzten Jahren Pilotprojekte wie die begrünten Wohntürme "Bosco Verticale" in Mailand, die mit ihren üppigen Balkon- und Fassadenbegrünungen die Themen Nachhaltigkeit, Biodiversität und Klimaanpassung mit Architektur und städtischem Wohnen vereinen.
