Gedanken zu zwei existenziellen Themenfeldern dichterisch zu verarbeiten, nämlich solche über die Kultur, zumal die Literatur unserer Ära, außerdem zu Fragen der Natur, ist das Hauptanliegen. Durch diese Schwerpunkte wird das Buch in zwei Teile gegliedert. Als solche stellen sie in ihm weder Gegensätze noch Widersprüche dar, sondern ergänzen einander, sind es doch Teile der subjektiven Wahrnehmung eines Menschen, nämlich des Dichters - von der Kultur in einer Gegenwartsgesellschaft und von Naturerfahrungen. Er hat von der Warte aus, wo er steht, persönlich gesehen, gefühlt, gedacht und geschrieben. Gedichte können nie wissenschaftlich-objektiven Ansprüchen genügen, sollen sie ja auch nicht. Also geht es um die innere Haltung des Dichters als eines Betrachters, zudem um die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit Kultur und mit Natur in vielen Bedeutungen.

This book is the first comprehensive study of Gottfried Benn's poetry to appear in English. It covers the entirety of Benn's verse, from his early Morgue cycle (1912) and Expressionist poems through to the «anthropological» poetry of his middle period to the «postmodern» Phase II work after the Second World War. Against the background of the poet's theoretical writings, this study, drawing upon the classic texts of Benn scholarship, analyzes in detail the major themes of his verse and its distinctive idiom. In particular, this work focuses on Gottfried Benn's extended process of rhetorical self-fashioning, his use of classical iconography, color motifs and chiffres, his often confusing historical semantics, the seemingly self-constituting «absolute» poem, and the colloquial idiom of his late verse. The book also engages with the multiplicity of voices in Benn's work and their varied textual forms, the hermeneutically variable positions of speech that they articulate and the often contradictory notion of selfhood to which they give rise.

Um 1900 etabliert sich mit dem Konzept namens Frauendichtung ein Aufschreibesystem, das die Frage weiblicher Autorschaft – und kontrastiv: männlicher Autorschaft – grundsätzlich aufwirft. Dieses an der Schwelle zur Moderne als überzeitliches Wissen behauptete Frauendichtungsparadigma ist von der Forschung bislang allenfalls kursorisch erfasst worden. Es steht im Zentrum der Untersuchung, die seine – und sei es als implizites Wissen – erstaunliche Persistenz bis in die Gegenwart nachweist. Die Studie schließt mit einer Analyse gegenwärtiger Verhandlungen geschlechtlich codierter Autorschaft und Kanonizität. Methodologisch rekurriert sie auf Verfahren der Diskurs- und Mythenanalyse, der Paratextualitätstheorie und der Praxeologie. What is a woman author? The early 20th century saw the emergence of a new concept, Frauendichtung (women's writing), a mode of discourse that fundamentally reframed the question of female—and thus also, by contrast, of male—authorship. The paradigm of women's writing as it emerged on the threshold to modernity, when it was associated with a kind of timeless knowledge, has been at best cursorily treated in extant scholarship. It is at the focus of the present study, which traces its astonishing longevity—if only at the level of implicit knowledge—up until the present day. The book concludes with an analysis of current debates on gender, authorship, and canonicity. Methodologically, it draws on techniques of discourse and myth analysis, paratext theory, and praxeology.
