Dadurch entsteht ein detail- und farbenreiches Bild der Beziehungen des deutschen Publikums, der Kritik und der Autoren zur englischen und französischen Literatur, das die herkömmlichen Vorstellungen von einer kulturellen Sonderentwicklung in Deutschland infolge ökonomischer und politischer 'Verspätung' infrage stellt.
