Die frühneuzeitliche Pluralisierung von Religions- und Wissensformen verdankt dem Corpus Hermeticum wesentliche Impulse. Ausgehend von den Quellen seiner Kritiker rekonstruiert diese Studie das Profil des hermetischen Diskurses in den Jahren zwischen 1530‐1730 und analysiert quellennah seine ambivalente Rolle zwischen verborgener Weisheit und Demokratisierung des Heilswissens. Die Einzelanalysen zu Sebastian Franck, Valentin Weigel, Jacob Böhme und Conrad Dippel verfolgen die Rezeption hermetischer Texte an der Schnittfläche zu Patristik, mittelalterlicher Mystik und neuer Naturphilosophie jenseits von philologischer Kritik. Oszillierend zwischen Heilshoffnung und Häresie geben die Texte zugleich Impulse zu einer in die Aufklärung weisenden Reflexion der unterschiedlichen Enkulturation religiösen Wissens und leisten damit einen unterschätzten Beitrag zur Toleranzdebatte. In ihrer Neudeutung von Systemstellen der christlichen Heilserzählung, des Zeitkonzepts sowie der Integration eines weiblichen Prinzips in Gott werden die oft pauschal zu esoterischen Geheimlehren verkürzten Schriften auf ihr innovatives und machtkritisches Potenzial hin transparent.

The historiographers of religious studies have written the history of this discipline primarily as a rationalization of ideological, most prominently theological and phenomenological ideas: first through the establishment of comparative, philological and sociological methods and secondly through the demand for intentional neutrality. This interpretation caused important roots in occult-esoteric traditions to be repressed. This process of “purification” (Latour) is not to be equated with the origin of the academic studies. De facto, the elimination of idealistic theories took time and only happened later. One example concerning the early entanglement is Tibetology, where many researchers and respected chair holders were influenced by theosophical ideas or were even members of the Theosophical Society. Similarly, the emergence of comparatistics cannot be understood without taking into account perennialist ideas of esoteric provenance, which hold that all religions have a common origin. In this perspective, it is not only the history of religious studies which must be revisited, but also the partial shaping of religious studies by these traditions, insofar as it saw itself as a counter-model to occult ideas.

Jacob Böhme (1575–1624) has been recognized as one of the internationally most influential German authors of the Early Modern period. Even today, his writings continue to impact fields as diverse as literature, philosophy, religion and art. Yet Böhme and his reception remain understudied. As a lay author, his works were often suppressed and circulated underground. Borrowing Böhme’s idea of “three worlds” or planes of existence, this volume traces the transmission of his thought through three stations: from his first underground readers in Central and Eastern Europe, to the Netherlands, where most of his writings were first published, to Britain, where early translations made him a popular author for generations to come. Toleration and Tolerance in Medieval European Literature aims to examine and unearth the critical investigations of toleration and tolerance presented in literary texts of the Middle Ages. In contrast to previous approaches, this volume identifies new methods of interpreting conventional classifications of toleration and tolerance through the emergence of multi-level voices in literary, religious, and philosophical discourses of authorities in medieval literature. Accordingly, this volume identifies two separate definitions of toleration and tolerance, the former as a representative of a majority group accepts a member of the minority group but still holds firmly to the believe that s/he is right and the other entirely wrong, and tolerance meaning that all faiths, convictions, and ideologies are treated equally, and the majority speaker is ready to accept that potentially his/her position is wrong. Applying these distinct differences in the critical investigation of interaction and representation in context, this book offers new insight into the tolerant attitudes portrayed in medieval literature of which regularly appealed, influenced and shaped popular opinions of the period.

Most professional historians see the relationship between pre-modern and modern alchemy as one of discontinuity and contrast. Mike A. Zuber challenges this dominant understanding and explores aspects of alchemy that have been neglected by recent work in the history of science. The predominant focus on the scientific aspect of alchemy, such as laboratory experiment, practical techniques, and material ingredients, argues Zuber, marginalizes the things that render alchemy so fascinating: its rich and vivid imagery, reliance on the medium of manuscript, and complicated relationship with religion. Spiritual Alchemy traces the early-modern antecedents of modern alchemy through generations of followers of Jacob Boehme, the cobbler and theosopher of Görlitz. As Boehme's disciples down the generations -- including the Silesian nobleman Abraham von Franckenberg and the London-based German immigrant Dionysius Andreas Freher, among others -- studied his writings, they drew on his spiritual alchemy, adapted it, and communicated it to their contemporaries. Spiritual alchemy combines traditional elements of alchemical literature with Christian mysticism. Defying the boundaries between science and religion, this combination was transmitted from Görlitz ultimately to England. In 1850, it inspired a young woman, later known as Mary Anne Atwood, to write her Suggestive Inquiry into the Hermetic Mystery, usually seen as the first modern interpretation of alchemy. Drawing extensively on manuscript or otherwise obscure sources, Zuber documents continuity between pre-modern and modern forms of alchemy while exploring this hybrid phenomenon.

How could a pious, Christian mystic spread radical Enlightenment ideas and freedom of thought? Johann Konrad Dippel was a radical pietist, an alchemist, a philosopher, a medical doctor, a renegade, a firebrand. He was also one of the most-read authors of early eighteenth-century Europe. Born at the Burg Frankenstein in the South of Germany, he was a truly cosmopolitan figure, straying between France, Berlin, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, and various German states. From 1714-1719, he was in Altona near Hamburg, then the second city of Denmark-Norway. Here, a labyrinthine case was brought against him, terminating with his banishment to the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. This book is the first to investigate in detail the Case Against Dippel in Altona, pitting him in a struggle against the strongest noble couple of Denmark-Norway, the Reventlows, presiding in Altona. It was a case involving libel, bribes, corruption, but also branching into blasphemy and gold-making. The investigation of the Case Against Dippel is embedded in a narrative of what is known about his frantic life and defiant thought before and after his seven-years' incarceration. The whole story throws a new light upon the challenging question of the origin of Modernity and the clandestine connections between radical pietism and radical Enlightenment.
