Der Antikommunismus in der Bonner Republik war bis Anfang der 1960er Jahre eine wichtige Quelle der Identitätsstiftung. Er zielte auf die innere Konsolidierung der noch ungefestigten westdeutschen Demokratie und wirkte sich auf den Umgang der damaligen Gesellschaft mit dem nationalsozialistischen Erbe aus. Das damit einhergehende Bekenntnis zum Antitotalitarismus war zugleich Teil der neuen Staatsräson, mit der die junge Bundesrepublik ihre Zugehörigkeit zur westlichen Wertegemeinschaft demonstrierte und auf östliche Infiltrationsversuche reagierte. Der Aufsatzband setzt sich differenziert mit den verschiedenen staatlichen und gesellschaftlichen Formen des Antikommunismus auseinander. Er reflektiert diesen in gesamtdeutscher Perspektive und beleuchtet somit ein bislang wenig bekanntes Kapitel deutscher Nachkriegsgeschichte.

Since 1945, what ‘conservative’ means has troubled intellectuals, politicians and parties in the United Kingdom and West Germany. In Britain conservatism was an accepted term of the political vocabulary, denoting a particular tradition of political thought and practice. In West Germany, by contrast, conservatism was a difficult concept for the young democracy to swallow. It carried a heavy antiliberal and antidemocratic burden and led people to question whether there was a place for conservatism within democratic culture after all. The Guardians of Concepts scrutinizes the debates about conservatism in the UK and the Federal Republic of Germany from the late 1940s to the early 1980s. Informed by historical semantics, it conceives of conservatism as a flexible linguistic structure, and shows the importance of language for the self-understanding of many conservatives, who not by chance, have regarded themselves as the guardians of concepts. The intense national and transnational debates about the meaning of conservatism had far-reaching consequences and continue to influence politics today.

Anticommunism in French Society and Politics, 1945-1953 evaluates the prevalence of anticommunism among the French population in 1945 to 1953, and examines its causes, character, and consequences through a series of case studies on different segments of French society. These include the scouting movement; family organisations; agricultural associations; middle-class groups; and trade unions and other working-class organisations. Aaron Clift contends that anticommunism was more widespread and deeply rooted than previously believed, and had a substantial impact on national politics and on these social groups and organisations. Furthermore, he argues that the study of anticommunism allows us a deeper understanding of the values they regarded as the most important to defend. Although anticommunism was a diverse phenomenon, this work identifies common discourses, including portrayals of communism as a threat to the nation; the colonial empire; the traditional family; private property; religion; the rural world; and Western civilisation. It also highlights common aims (such as the rehabilitation of wartime collaborators) and tactics (such as the invocation of apoliticism). While acknowledging the importance of the Cold War, it rejects the assumption that anticommunism was an American import or foreign to French society and demonstrates links between anticommunism and anti-Americanism. It concludes that anticommunism drew its strength from the connection or even conflation of communism with perceived negative social changes that were seen to threaten traditional French civilisation, interacting with the postwar international and domestic environment and the personal experiences of individual anticommunists.

Across the modern era, the traditional stereotype of Germans as authoritarian and subservient has faded, as they have become (mostly) model democrats. This book, for the first time, examines 130 years of history to comprehensively address the central questions of German democratization: How and why did this process occur? What has democracy meant to various Germans? And how stable is their, or indeed anyone's, democracy? Looking at six German regimes across thirteen decades, this study enables you to see how and why some Germans have always chosen to be politically active (even under dictatorships); the enormous range of conceptions of political culture and democracy they have held; and how interactions among various factors undercut or facilitated democracy at different times. Michael L. Hughes also makes clear that recent surges of support for 'populism' and 'authoritarianism' have not come out of nowhere but are inherent in long-standing contestations about democracy and political citizenship. Hughes argues that democracy – in Germany or elsewhere – cannot be a story of adversity overcome which culminates in a happy ending; it is an ongoing, open-ended process whose ultimate outcome remains uncertain.

Die Studie von Alina Laura Tiews erkundet diese bisher unbekannte Filmgeschichte von Flucht und Vertreibung für den Zeitraum des geteilten Deutschlands nach 1945. Nicht nur die Filme selbst werden darin ausgewertet, sondern ebenso unveröff entlichtes Archivmaterial zu deren Produktions- und Rezeptionsgeschichte.
