In 2017 zal het 500 jaar geleden zijn dat de protestantse kerkhervorming begon. Deze reformatie veranderde het aanzien van het christendom in veel Europese landen volledig. Maar weinigen weten dat het huidige België van meet af aan nauw bij deze godsdienstige omwenteling betrokken was. In het buitenland beroemde namen als Guido de Brès, Jacob de Keirsmaeker en Petrus Dathenus zijn hier nauwelijks bekend. Dit boek beschrijft in grote lijnen de geschiedenis van het protestantisme en de protestantse kerken in België. Het schetst de samenhang tussen verschillende gebeurtenissen en ontwikkelingen in België, maar waar relevant ook daarbuiten, van het begin in de zestiende eeuw tot in onze tijd. Ook het gedachtegoed van de protestantse kerken komt aan bod, zowel op theologisch als kerkelijk-praktisch en persoonlijk gebied. Hierbij zijn steeds zoveel mogelijk vertegenwoordigers van protestantse kerken uit België zelf aan het woord gelaten. De titel verwijst naar een bekende slagzin van de reformatie: naast het Sola scriptura, alleen door de Schrift, en het Sola gratia, alleen door genade, is er het Sola fide, alleen door geloof. Samen vormen ze de basisovertuiging van protestanten in al hun verscheidenheid: God kennen wij alleen door de Schrift, niet door menselijke traditie of filosofie, met God verbonden zijn is alleen mogelijk door de genade die Hij ons in Christus geschonken heeft, niet door enige vorm van menselijke verdienste, en deze genade ontvangen wij alleen door geloof, door het vertrouwen in Christus alleen. Het boek wil bijdragen tot meer begrip voor de waarde die dit vertrouwen heeft in het leven van velen. Bovendien biedt het een waardevolle oriëntatie voor iedereen die kennis wil maken met het protestantisme in België.

Vital Democracy outlines a theory of democracy in action, based on four elementary forms of democracy - pendulum, consensus, voter and participatory democracy - that are thoroughly analysed, compared and related to both the literature and the real world of democracy.
