Gemba is a Japanese word meaning the actual place where value-creating work happens. Many leaders use gemba only for solving problems, visiting only when there is an issue. Others practice gemba walks on a daily basis to follow up and monitor the situation. However, Toyota believes that leaders truly develop through daily experiences at the gemba. In reality, gemba is a principle for managing, developing and improving people and processes. It is a valuable tool that helps lean practitioners learn the true facts so they can base management decisions on the actual situation.

Genchi genbutsu is the Toyota way of thoroughly understanding a situation by personally observing and confirming information or data at the place where the situation is happening. For instance, when someone in charge is trying to figure out a problem, they will go to where the work is being done and watch how it's being done. They will also talk to the people doing the work to make sure the information is correct and to understand what's going on. They won't only trust information from a computer or from other people. This rule applies to both high-level leaders and lower-level supervisors. In simple words, genchi genbutsu in Japanese means "go and see" but it directly translates to "real place and real thing. TPS is a Thinking Production System rooted in leadership and a comprehensive set of principles, we can begin to fully appreciate its potential and apply it effectively in diverse industries and contexts. So, what exactly is TPS? It is a holistic approach to production that requires a shift in mindset and a deep understanding of the principles that drive its implementation. TPS is not limited to a specific industry or a set of rigid techniques. It is a philosophy that can be applied to any organization, regardless of its context or sector. There is a common misconception about the true essence of the Toyota Production System (TPS) and the core values that drive the Toyota Way. Many people view TPS as merely a tool kit or a set of lean manufacturing techniques that are unique to Toyota due to their specific processes, stable environment, or consistent customer demand. Similarly, there is a belief that TPS only applies to the automotive industry.

Having no standardization work process means no quality. Everyone will do this task differently. Tracking the source of errors is difficult without the work standard. When a leader perform gemba walk on shop floor to observe the situation, there is no benefit from the walk when there is no standard. In the classic old way of management, companies were and (many are still) following the Taylor’s principle, Taylor said that industrial engineers should be the only ones who initiate, create, modify, adapt and improve the process. And workers should follow what the industrial engineers are saying. Standard work is being used to measure employees performance. This is really a contrary to respect for people which is one of the main pillars in the Toyota production system and was the reason why Toyota is a high performance company. Toyota is strong by its people not by its process. Toyota Creates standard work to eliminate wastes, develop employees skills and develop high level of knowledge.

The most important thing in standardized work is finding a balance between giving employees strict rules to follow and allowing them to be creative and come up with new ideas to consistently meet difficult goals like cost, quality, and delivery. The secret to finding the right balance depends on how standards are written and who helps create them.
