Every third year, the members of the International Association for Neo-Latin Studies (IANLS) assemble for a week-long conference. Over the years, this event has evolved into the largest single conference in the field of Neo-Latin studies. The papers presented at these conferences offer, then, a general overview of the current status of Neo-Latin research; its current trends, popular topics, and methodologies. In 2022, the members of IANLS gathered for a conference in Leuven where 50 years ago the first of these congresses took place.This volume presents the conference’s papers which were submitted after the event and which have undergone a peer-review process. "Since its founding by Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, the Society of Jesus ("The Jesuits") has been intimately involved in the unfolding of the modern world. The young Jesuit order played a crucial role in the Counter Reformation, especially in Poland, southern Germany, and several other parts of Europe. The Jesuits were also participants in the establishment and spread of European empires, engaging in missionary activity in east and south Asia in the 16th and 17th centuries, and becoming central to the spreading of Christianity in the New World. At the same time, Jesuits often tangled with the Roman curia and the Pope, leading to the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773. After the subsequent restoration of the order in 1814, the Jesuits continued to be leaders in Catholic education and theology. In 2013 Jorge Bergoglio became the first Jesuit Pope, taking the name Pope Francis I. In this book, Markus Friedrich presents the first comprehensive account of the Jesuits from a non-Catholic perspective. Drawing on his expertise as a historian of the early modern world, Friedrich situates the Jesuit order within the wider perspective of European history. In particular, he places the Jesuits in the context of social, cultural, and imperial history, showing that the Jesuits were not monolithic but rather were very sensitive to local context and that the order's core texts, especially Ignatius's Spiritual Exercises, were templates to engage with, rather than instructions manuals to be followed slavishly"--

Heute sind die meisten neulateinischen Epen Italiens im Internet leicht zugänglich. Gleichwohl erfordern diese Texte oft schon wegen ihres Umfangs auch für eine nur oberflächliche Würdigung viel Zeit und Mühe. Um dem abzuhelfen, bietet das vorgelegte Werk griffige Zusammenfassungen und grundlegende Erläuterungen der ausgebreiteten Ereignisse unter Berücksichtigung der dichterischen Qualitäten. Nicht wenige Epiker sind allerdings schon gut erforscht und allgemein bekannt. Es schien daher sinnvoll, hier nur eine Auswahl von 27 Epen vorzulegen, aus den fünf Jahrhunderten seit 1480, die bisher wenig oder gar keine Aufmerksamkeit gefunden haben - zu Unrecht, da es sich dabei um ausgesprochen originelle und literarisch hochstehende Gedichte handelt. Eine Fortsetzung der Reihe mit 40 weiteren Epen ist in Arbeit. **************** Today most Neo-Latin Italian epics are easily accessible via the Internet. Nonetheless, even a superficial evaluation of these texts often requires much time and effort on account of their length. To assist the reader, this work offers handy summaries and basic explanations of the events depicted, also taking account of the epics’ poetic qualities. More than a few epic writers have already been studied in depth and are widely known. Therefore it seemed sensible to present here only a selection of 27 epics from the five centuries since 1480 which have previously received little or no attention – unjustly since they are decidedly original poems of a high literary quality. A further volume covering 40 more epics is in preparation.

Si presenta qui l’edizione critica, accompagnata da uno studio introduttivo, da una traduzione italiana e da un commento, della tragedia Ionathas (1750), la cui chiave interpretativa è da ricondursi al tema del legame tra etica e libero arbitrio, presupposto fondante del sistema morale dei discepoli di Ignazio. Giuseppe Enrico Carpani (1683–1762) was a prolific Jesuit poet and playwright in Latin, and a professor of grammar, logic and rhetoric at the Collegio Romano. He is probably the main representative of Roman Jesuit drama in the first half of the 18th century and a key figure in the broader context of the relationship between the Jesuit Order and the Accademia dell’Arcadia, a theme which is still hotly debated in literary studies. This volume presents a critical edition of the tragedy Ionathas (1750), whose interpretative key lies in the theme of the bond of ethics and free will, a fundamental assumption of the moral system of Jesuits. This edition of the text is accompanied by an introductory study, an Italian translation and a commentary.
