In rethinking and reframing the American national narrative in a wider context, the contributors to this volume ask questions about both nationalism and the discipline of history itself. In der radikal-nationalistischen Phase des ausgehenden Kaiserreiches (1895-1915) etablierten hanchinesische Intellektuelle und Politiker beide Figuren als nationale Symbole im Kampf gegen die mandschurische Fremdherrschaft und nutzten sie dazu, die vormals imperiale Identitat in eine nationale Identitat zu transformieren. Die Arbeit geht insbesondere dem Problem nach, auf welche Weise in dieser von Sozialdarwinismus und Rassismus gepragten Zeit ethnische und rassische Differenzen innerhalb des Reiches mit dem Projekt einer nationalen Identitat versohnt wurden, und welche Konsequenzen dies fur den modernen multiethnischen Staat hatte, der 1912 als Republik gegrundet wurde.Eine detaillierte Betrachtung der narrativen Strategien zur Identitatsstiftung sowie der Verehrung beider Figuren an ihren Grabstatten - bereits vor dem 20. Jahrhundert veritable Gedachtnisorte (lieux de memoire) - macht dabei deutlich, dass obwohl die massgeblichen Diskursakteure - die Hanchinesen - ihre eigene Identitat zunachst in Opposition zu den Fremdherrschern der Qing-Dynastie formulierten, ihre Definition des Chinesischen weiterhin auf traditionellen Konzepten beruht, die eher imperialer als nationaler Natur sind. Dieser Umstand ist fur das nationale Selbstverstandnis Chinas auch heute noch von zentraler Bedeutung.
