Gender gaps in employment, however, are not just an emerging or developing economy problem. Developed economies also have a range of gender gaps to tackle. This report is the culmination of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) - led SheWorks global private sector partnership launched at the 2014 Clinton global initiative annual meeting. The partnership's aim was to advance employment opportunities and improve working conditions for more than 300,000 women by 2016. The full report consolidates the 13 members' learning and best practice around the recruitment, retention, and promotion of female employees. SheWorks members and strategic partners have contributed their knowledge and expertise to this report. The aim of this report is to help companies across regions and sectors identify and implement gender-smart recruitment, retention, and promotion policies that work best for their (female) employees and the business. The report concludes with suggestions for future research and partnerships, and highlights issues that were beyond the terms of reference of the SheWorks partnership but vital to advancing women's employment. The summary provides a brief synopsis of each chapter while additional promising practices and lessons learned are provided in the full report.

As we face global challenges like climate change and inequality, what if women could use their investments to build a cleaner, fairer and more sustainable world? Financial feminism – the belief in the financial equality of women – has been gathering momentum, largely in the context of the gender pay gap: on average a woman earns 80% of what a man does. But there’s another gap – the gender investing gap – which shows women are investing less than men, saving less for retirement and parking more in cash. When compounded by the gender pay gap, this results in a significant shortfall, but there’s more to financial feminism than simply addressing these gaps: women also care about where their money is invested and the impact it can have. In this practical and accessible guide, sustainable investing expert Jessica Robinson shows how through financial feminism, women can use their financial power to invest in a sustainable future and build the kind of world they want to live in. With jargon-free explanations and real-world examples, she demystifies the financial services industry, breaks down just what sustainable investing is and demonstrates the societal and environmental impact of the investment decisions we make. Arming women with the information they need to get started – and keep going – she hopes that more women will embrace financial feminism, invest to grow their own wealth and, in doing so, use their financial decisions to demand a better world.

Financial and policy measures are needed to improve access-to-finance conditions for women-led companies. EIB's InnovFin Advisory assesses the access-to-risk-capital conditions for women-driven companies in Europe in comparison to mainly the US. While women-led companies still account for a small portion of deal flow and overall volume invested, the rate of growth has increased. Nevertheless, structural inequalities and persistent biases hinder the transition to a better functioning funding environment. The study puts forth a number of innovation finance and policy related recommendations. Restarting the EU economy after the coronavirus pandemic provides a unique opportunity to include the gender dimension.

This book examines the world of finance and the role of gender within it. It looks at the financial services industry, arguably the most powerful and remunerative sector that exists, and shows how it was created by men for men. The author explains how historically women were excluded, how minimal progress has been made, and outlines how the sector still needs to change to function effectively in a modern, equal opportunities world. Addressing gender inequality in financial services is of utmost urgency and importance because of the extent to which it affects women in all stages of life. Women’s exclusion in financial services is also mirrored by how men have been excluded from parenting through a similar set of societal expectations, government legislation and corporate policies. The author maintains that to succeed, we need to address both financial services and parenting. To do so we need regulatory support. Because of its power and dominance, the financial services industry has the opportunity to lead this change and to champion gender equal practices. These practices are economically beneficial to all participants, not only female employees and consumers. We all need these benefits as we rebuild our economies following the COVID-19 pandemic. The book makes an important contribution to the critical and increasing awareness of gender concerns. It presents insights drawn from original research and data about gender biases. The book is an essential secondary text for a range of university courses, including economics, finance and accounting, business studies and gender related courses, as well as MBAs and Executive Education programmes that focus on gender in business. It is also a must read for policy makers, managers in financial services institutions and any other businesses that seek to attract the growing market of female consumers, employees and business leaders.

The business case for gender equality is compelling. It is also widely underutilized. The most commonly cited evidence of the business case highlights two points: first, gender equality strengthens national economies, and, second, investing in women in senior leadership strengthens companies in which they work. While both are essential to making the business case, neither represents the full scope of benefits that can be derived from closing gaps between men and women in the private sector. This report supports the business case by highlighting quantitative evidence and best-practice examples from International Finance Corporation's (IFC) global clients and partners. These cases demonstrate how companies can implement targeted solutions with their employees, entrepreneurs, customers, and community stakeholders. They also illustrate that the business case of studies have sought to highlight the rationale for the private sector to close gaps between men and women. This report offers firm-level data on how companies can benefit from implementing gender-smart solutions. These featured cases represent an array of sectors and geographies. They also offer proof that individual firms can innovate, grow, and profit by closing gender gaps. Finally, the cases demonstrate not just results but a variety of practical approaches for putting the business case into action.

Despite some progress, women's share in senior management is still poor. Closing the gender gap in leadership leads to better business and financial outcomes. ADB's Trade Finance Program—which guaranteed or funded 3,500 transactions in 2017 valued at $4.5 billion—conducted a gender audit among several of its partner banks. The objective of this study was to develop specific, practical and implementable recommendations to attract, retain, and promote more women in banking. This study was a joint effort between ADB's Private Sector Department and the Gender Equity Thematic Group, funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
