Genealogisches Wissen war in der Vormoderne eine wichtige Ressource. Adlige und bürgerliche Akteur: innen benötigten es im Ringen um Rang und Ämter, Gelehrte nutzten es für die Geschichtsschreibung. Der Band untersucht den Umgang diverser Akteursgruppen mit genealogischem Wissen und fragt nach dessen Konstruktion, Darstellung und Rezeption. Mit Blick auf die genealogischen Wissenskonstruktionen rücken die Kenntnisse und Absichten der Akteure in den Blick: Woher bezogen und wozu benötigten Adlige und Gelehrte, aber auch Handwerker und Rechtspraktiker genealogische Informationen? Damit verknüpft sind die medialen Darstellungsformen genealogischer Wissensbestände. At the turn of the eighteenth century, selfhood was understood as a “tabularasa” to be imprinted in the course of an individual’s life. By the middle of the nineteenth-century, however, the individual had become defined as determined by heredity already from birth. Examining novels by Goethe, Jean Paul, and E.T.A. Hoffmann, studies on plant hybridization, treatises on animal breeding, and anatomical collections, Romanticism, Origins, and the History of Heredity delineates how romantic authors imagined the ramifications of emerging notions of heredity for the conceptualization of selfhood. Focusing on three fields of inquiry—inbreeding and incest, cross-breeding and bastardization, evolution and autopoiesis—Christine Lehleiter proposes that the notion of selfhood for which Romanticism has become known was not threatened by considerations of determinism and evolution, but was in fact already a result of these very considerations. This volume assesses how current approaches to iconology and iconography break new ground in understanding the signification and reception of medieval images, both in their own time and in the modern world. Framed by critical essays that apply explicitly historiographical and sociopolitical perspectives to key moments in the evolution of the field, the volume’s case studies focus on how iconographic meaning is shaped by factors such as medieval modes of dialectical thought, the problem of representing time, the movement of the viewer in space, the fragmentation and injury of both image and subject, and the complex strategy of comparing distant cultural paradigms. Die zunehmende Bedeutung dynastischen Denkens im Hochadel schlug sich seit dem ausgehenden Mittelalter in Hauschroniken und Genealogien ebenso nieder wie in komplexen Erbfolgeregelungen und einem gesteuerten Heiratsverhalten. Am Beispiel der Grafenhäuser Lippe und Waldeck analysiert der Autor unterschiedliche Praktiken und Diskurse der Dynastiebildung, in deren Zuge adlige Verwandtschaftsverbände eine institutionelle Form annahmen. Der Fokus liegt dabei insbesondere auf den Konflikten, die von den einzelnen Akteuren um die Ausgestaltung der sozialen Ordnung, um Beteiligung an Herrschaft und Besitz sowie um die Implementation von Normen geführt wurden. Der Prozess der Dynastiebildung, so macht die Studie deutlich, führte keineswegs unmittelbar zu verstärkter Integration, sondern war von Verwerfungen und Brüchen geprägt. Daher mussten neue Wege gefunden werden, um die Einheit der Dynastie symbolisch zum Ausdruck zu bringen.

The wives of rulers in early modern Europe did far more than provide heirs for their principalities and adornment for their courts. In this study, Judith Aikin examines the exceptionally well-documented actions of one such woman, Aemilia Juliana of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt (1637-1706), in order to expand our understanding of the role of ruler’s consort in the small principalities characteristic of Germany during this period. Aikin explores a wide range of writings by her subject, including informal letters to another woman, hundreds of devotional song texts, manuscript books both devotional and practical, and published pamphlets and books. Also important for this study are the plays, paintings, and musical works that adorned the court under Aemilia Juliana’s patronage; the books, poems, and sermons published in her honor; and the massive memorial volume printed and distributed soon after her death. This material, when coupled with the more scanty record in official documents, reveals the nature and scope of Aemilia Juliana’s role as full partner in the ruling couple. Among the most important findings based on this evidence are those related to Aemilia Juliana’s advocacy for women of all social classes through her authorship and publications, her support for the education of girls, her efforts to ameliorate the fear and suffering of pregnant and birthing women, and her contributions to female support networks. In examining the career of a consort whose various activities are so well documented, this study helps to fill in the blanks in the documentary record of numerous consorts across early modern Europe, and serves as a model for future research on other consorts at other courts.
