Nel 1967 Isaiah Berlin osservò che il dibattito sul populismo rischiava di rimanere vittima del “complesso di Cenerentola”. Gli studiosi che tentavano di chiarire cosa fosse davvero il “populismo” parevano cioè destinati a cercare all’infinito un caso paradigmatico, una Cenerentola in grado di calzare perfettamente la scarpetta di una definizione teorica. E a più di mezzo secolo di distanza quella scarpetta appare oggi ancora più inafferrabile. Questo volume non ha l’ambizione di superare il “complesso di Cenerentola”, ma si propone più semplicemente di portare alla luce alcune delle motivazioni che rendono complicato – seppur non impossibile – utilizzare il termine “populismo”. I diversi contributi offrono materiali proprio per una genealogia di “populismo”: cercano cioè di mostrare come la genesi del concetto – o, meglio, la sua “re-invenzione” – sia inestricabilmente connessa al ruolo giocato dalle scienze sociali e alla costruzione di una sorta di alterità “patologica” rispetto alla norma della democrazia liberale. Per comprendere davvero lo Zeitgeist populista, è invece probabilmente necessario superare gli equivoci ereditati dalla tormentata genesi di un concetto paranoico.

A dieci anni dalla scomparsa di Ernesto Laclau, Samuele Mazzolini analizza il lascito intellettuale di uno dei pensatori radicali più influenti e discussi della teoria politica contemporanea. Il libro raccoglie una serie di interventi critici, accompagnati da un’intervista a Laclau stesso, insieme a conversazioni con Chantal Mouffe e Íñigo Errejón. I testi esplorano da più prospettive vizi e virtù del corpus del teorico argentino sin dai suoi esordi, soffermandosi con particolare attenzione su due delle nozioni che lo hanno maggiormente caratterizzato: populismo ed egemonia. Ma il contributo di Laclau è analizzato anche attraverso il prisma dell’emancipazione: mediante l’indagine empirica dei casi di Podemos in Spagna e del governo di Rafael Correa in Ecuador, l’autore passa al setaccio sfide e limiti nell’applicazione dell’ipotesi populista di sinistra in Europa e in America Latina. Ne emerge un Laclau stratega, le cui intuizioni hanno offerto una risposta efficace alle recenti difficoltà che la sinistra ha incontrato nel dar vita a una volontà popolare abbastanza forte da graffiare sul piano storico. Tuttavia, vengono evidenziati anche alcuni aspetti rivedibili alla luce di diverse smentite. In tal senso, il libro contribuisce in modo significativo all’avvio di un’agenda di lavoro post-laclauiana.

The hypothesis from which this book starts is that the twentieth century has broken the link between time and history, thus producing a twofold consequence. On the one hand, time definitively loses the characteristics of linearity and coherence that it still had in Hegel, and will be conceived in terms of a multiplicity of heterogeneous temporal lines; on the other hand, and consequently, history tends to disappear from the philosophical horizon to give way to theses on a post-historical time, whose main characteristics are stasis, the inability to synthesize incoherent temporalities, the impossibility of producing openings towards the future. However, precisely within the short century – the one in which time has supposedly contracted to the point of expunging history from itself – critical reflections were produced, which, despite the acquisition of scientific and philosophical lessons about the multi- form and reversible nature of time, have recovered a fruitful relation with history in a cumulative and teleological sense.

The concept of 'populism' is currently used by scholars, the media and political actors to refer to multiple and disparate manifestations and phenomena from across both the left and the right ends of the political spectrum. As a result, it defies neat definition, as scholarship on the topic has shown over the last 50 years. In this book, Sebastián Moreno Barreneche approaches populism from a semiotic perspective and argues that it constitutes a specific social discourse grounded on a distinctive narrative structure that is brought to life by political actors that are labelled 'populist'. Conceiving of populism as a mode of semiotic production that is based on a conception of the social space as divided into two groups, 'the People' and 'the Other', this book uses semiotic theory to make sense of this political phenomenon. Exploring how the categories of 'the People' and 'the Other' are discursively constructed by populist political actors through the use of semiotic resources, the ways in which meaning emerges through the oppositions between imagined collective actors is explained. Drawing on examples from Europe, North America and South America, The Social Semiotics of Populism presents a systematic semiotic approach to this multifaceted political concept and bridges semiotic theory and populism studies in an original manner.

El área de Historia Contemporánea de la Universidad de Castilla – La Mancha organizó entre el 21 y el 23 de septiembre de 2016 la XIII edición del congreso bienal de la Asociación de Historia Contemporánea (AHC). La Historia, lost in translation? consolidó y sometió a discusión y debate treinta y tres paneles, dirigidos por noventa y un coordinadores, que sumaron un total de cuatrocientos doce textos elaborados por cuatrocientos cincuenta y dos congresistas de diferentes nacionalidades. Estas actas recogen los resultados de treinta y uno de esos talleres, y doscientas ochenta y seis investigaciones. Después de trece ediciones, el proyecto bienal de congresos de la Asociación de Historia Contemporánea (AHC) puede considerarse un referente como pocos de la investigación, la producción de conocimiento científico y su divulgación.
