Excerpt from Hispanic American Bibliographies: Including Collective Biographies, Histories of Literature and Selected General Works It is the compiler's intention to publish from time to time in the hispanic american historical review supplementary lists of bio bibliographical contributions to include current publications and also those that may not have been recorded in the present list. However, in this note to the special reprint edition it seems desirable to note the more important titles that have accumulated since the last part of the list was sent to the printer. By a regrettable oversight, Dr. Charles Carroll Marden's Notes for a bibliography of American Spanish (studies in honor of A. Marshall Elliott, Baltimore, Johns Hopkins press, 1911, p. 267 - 292) was omitted. This work, while modestly denominated Notes by the scholarly author, is in reality a comprehensive repertory of the literature of the subject prepared by one who is himself a specialist in the field. Dr. Marden is preparing a second edition in which he will incorporate the numerous contributions to the literature of the subject which have appeared Since 1911. Of the series of Hispanic American biographical repertories prepared by William Belmont Parker under the auspices of the Hispanic Society of America, the following are to be noted in addition to the two included in the list: Bolivians of to-day, New York, 1920 (xiv, 319 p.) Chileans of to-day, New York, 1920 (xix, 633 p.) Paraguayans of to-day, New York, 1920 (xv, 315 Peruvians of to-day, Lima, 1919 (xix, 616 This series of works forms a rather comprehensive and exceedingly valuable Who's Who of Hispanic America. A Reference Guide For English Studies written by Michael J. Marcuse and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990-01-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

This ambitious undertaking is designed to acquaint students, teachers, and researchers with reference sources in any branch of English studies, which Marcuse defines as "all those subjects and lines of critical and scholarly inquiry presently pursued by members of university departments of English language and literature.'' Within each of 24 major sections, Marcuse lists and annotates bibliographies, guides, reviews of research, encyclopedias, dictionaries, journals, and reference histories. The annotations and various indexes are models of clarity and usefulness, and cross references are liberally supplied where appropriate. Although cost-conscious librarians will probably consider the several other excellent literary bibliographies in print, such as James L. Harner's Literary Research Guide (Modern Language Assn. of America, 1989), larger academic libraries will want Marcuse's volume.-- Jack Bales, Mary Washington Coll. Roy Harris written by Dan Stehman and has been published by Greenwood this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991-09-10 with Music categories.

A seminal figure in the development of distinctively American concert music, Roy Harris created a large body of compositions in virtually all media in a career spanning more than fifty years, from the 1920s to the 1970s. His fortunes fluctuated widely with the public and critical community. Eclipsed during the 1960s, when his conservative idiom with its strong nationalistic stance was out of vogue, he and his work have gained increased scholarly, performance, and recording interest in recent decades, which have brought to the fore an entire generation of neglected American composers. Documenting and organizing Harris's complex oeuvre is the essential concern of the present book, and the catalogue of works and performances provides information on instrumentation, premieres, publication, and special aspects of each composition. Like the catalog, the discography is the most thorough ever assembled for Harris, and it also includes commentary on features of the recordings. The extensive annotated bibliography includes reference sources, scholarly works, general works, text sources, folksong sources, writings by Harris, and critical reviews. Works, recordings, and bibliography are carefully enumerated, cross-referenced, and indexed. An opening study of Harris's life, works, and style incorporates gleanings from an oral history collection recently made available. This research tool is an essential companion to any critical study of Harris and will provide a firm base on which future such studies can be developed.

Jean Langlais written by Kathleen Thomerson and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1988-05-13 with Music categories.

This is the first book on the French composer Jean Langlais to be published in English and also the first to provide complete information on all of his published works plus 86 unplubished compositions, and eleven orchestral works. This book traces Langlais' development from his early years of study at the National Institute for the Young Blind, through his long and active career as composer, church musician, and concert organist, and explores the impact that Langlais' hard work, determination, and talent have had on the musical world. It is divided into five major sections, including a biography, interviews, works and performances, a discography, and a bibliography. Listing 240 compositions written between 1927 and 1987, and containing a complete discography of both commercially produced and privately released recordings, the major portion of this volume is an annotated bibliography of writings by and about Langlais, with 536 entries, covering the years from 1926 to 1987, when he celebrated his eightieth birthday. Categories include general references, individual compositions, improvisations, reviews of recordings, nonprint sources, and archive information. There is valuable information on premieres, reactions to Langlais' works and performances, recital programs, and correspondence. The opus numbers, recently completed by Marie-Louise Jaquet-Langlais, the composer's wife, are published here for the first time in a chronological list of compositions, and the index section covers works, authors and translators, and general information.

Ulysses Kay written by and has been published by Greenwood this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994-05-19 with Music categories.

In the past five decades, Ulysses Kay has produced more than 135 compositions, representing divergent musical forms. His works include five operas, over 20 large orchestral works, more than 30 choral compositions, over 15 chamber works, a ballet suite, and numerous other compositions for voice, solo instruments, film, and television. His compositions, part of the mainstream concert repertory, have received extensive performances by major orchestras and ensembles throughout the world and have earned for him a prodigious number of awards, fellowships, grants, and commissions. This volume includes his biography, a chronological listing of his works, a complete discography to Spring 1994--each with selected performance notes--and an annotated bibliography, all of which will be of interest to music students and scholars, as well as the general reading public. Ulysses Kay, one of America's well-published and frequently performed composers, has worked closely with most of the renowned conductors of this century. In addition, he is probably the most published and most frequently commissioned composer living today: As Oliver Daniel descriptively stated, Kay has been heard from Kiev to Kennebunkport. The composer acknowledges that almost all of his compositions have been performed, more than half published, and a large number recorded. His quiet, soft-spoken demeanor reflects a deep reverence and humility which belies the intensity and drive he brings to his craft. Kay is a product of American institutions--a graduate of the University of Arizona and the Eastman School of Music, among others--and his long tenure at the Herbert H. Lehman College of the City University of New York was honorably recognized when he was named Distinguished Professor. This volume includes excerpts from a personal interview with Kay, which provides insight into the composer's musical views and memorable experiences.

Clarice Lispector was one of the most important Brazilian writers in Portuguese of the 20th century, and her work continues to receive critical attention. This reference provides a detailed record of her life and career. The book begins with introductory material on the difficulties of documenting her work, and on her life as a writer. The chapters that follow provide annotated entries for works written by and about her. The first part of the book contains chapters on each of Lispector's major works. Each chapter begins with a brief critical essay, followed by lists of editions and translations, as well as criticism. Also included are chapters on other works by Lispector. The second part of the volume contains chapters on general works about Lispector's writing, such as biographical accounts, bibliographies and other reference works, and general criticism. Appendices provide translations of her Portuguese titles, and an index concludes the volume.
